Homecoming 2024 officially kicked off this week, bringing together a huge crowd of FAMU-ly members and friends to celebrate the beloved tradition. As the festivities get underway, the FAMu Police Department has brought in additional resources to ensure the safety of everyone throughout the week-long event.
"Safety is a top priority," said Audrey Alexander, FAMU Chief of Police. To maintain security, there will be an increased law enforcement presence from the FAMU Police Department, Tallahassee Police Department, and Leon County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, extra metal detectors will be in place at all events to screen attendees.
FAMU has contracted with additional security companies to assist, with access to campus security cameras and license plate readers. These comprehensive additional security measures are aimed to prevent any potential issues and ensure a safe environment for all.
With the influx of visitors and activities, neighbors can expect traffic enforcement and impacts on major streets such as MLK Blvd, Althea Gibson Way, and Okaloosa St. The university advises attendees and local residents to plan their travel accordingly and be mindful of traffic changes during the homecoming week.
“Security is a shared responsibility,” said Chief Alexander reminds us. “It doesn’t just start and stop with the police department. We all have a part in this. So if you see something, say something!”
The additional safe precautions come on the heals of a shooting death which caused Morgan State to cancel its homecoming last year and recent shooting incidents this year at nearby Albany State University during its homecoming, and Tennessee State University.
The FAMU Homecoming 2024 is not just a celebration of school spirit but also a testament to the university community's commitment to safety and security. FAMU is redoubling efforts to make this year's homecoming a safe and memorable event for everyone involved.
