FAMU grad Bernard "Bernie" Hendricks Jr., the band director at Ocoee High School, has been named a semifinalist for the Music Educator of the Year award by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Museum. Hendricks is one of only 25 semifinalists announced for the 2025 Music Educator Award. This prestigious recognition highlights Hendricks's dedication and impact on his students over his nearly 30-year career.

Hendricks has not only shaped the musical talents of countless students but has also forged deep personal connections with them. A testament to these bonds is the fact that he has officiated weddings for more than 10 former students.

"That’s really cool and really rewarding that I’m able to, through the music program, build those types of relationships," Hendricks said. His ability to connect with students on a personal level has made him a beloved figure in the Ocoee community.

The 51-year-old music educator has been honored locally (in greater Orlando) for his contributions to the music program and his unwavering support for his students. His passion for music and education has inspired many young musicians to pursue their dreams and excel in their musical endeavors.

The GRAMMY Museum Music Educator Award honors "educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to music education and demonstrate a deep commitment to maintaining music education in schools," according to the official GRAMMY Awards website.

The award recipient will be selected from 10 finalists and will receive a $10,000 honorarium, along with a matching grant for their school's music program. The nine additional finalists will each receive a $1,000 honorarium and matching grants. The remaining semifinalists, who are not selected as finalists, will receive a $500 honorarium with matching school grants.

Hendricks's colleagues and students are proud of his achievements and are rooting for him to win the coveted award. His commitment to music education continues to inspire and uplift the Ocoee High School community.
