FAMU Interim President Timothy L. Beard announced today the appointment of Carmen Cummings-Martin as the university’s new chief of staff, effective March 17, 2025. This strategic decision reflects FAMU's commitment to leveraging internal talent to drive its strategic initiatives forward.

Cummings-Martin, a seasoned administrator with extensive experience and deep ties to FAMU, will continue to serve in her current role as assistant vice president of University Engagement & Alumni Affairs while taking on the additional responsibilities of chief of staff. Her dual roles are expected to foster a more integrated approach to university governance and alumni relations.

In his announcement, President Beard expressed confidence in Cummings-Martin’s capabilities, stating, “Her years of experience in alumni relations, government relations, and logistics will be an asset, and her commitment to FAMU is palpable. I am confident that she will continue to help advance our priorities in this new role.” This endorsement underscores the trust and expectations placed on Cummings-Martin as she steps into her new position.

Cummings-Martin’s extensive background in university engagement positions her uniquely to understand the needs and aspirations of both current students and alumni. Her ability to connect with various stakeholders will be instrumental in advancing FAMU’s mission and enhancing its reputation as a leading institution of higher learning.

As chief of staff, Cummings-Martin will be tasked with overseeing key administrative functions, coordinating strategic initiatives, and ensuring effective communication across the university.

One of Cummings-Martin's initial responsibilities will be to reduce missteps within the Office of the President, such as the widely publicized incident in January. During this event, President Beard placed the university at the center of a political dispute between Governor DeSantis and Byron Donalds at the Black Conservative Foundation in Washington, D.C., by presenting Donalds with a Rattler Award while on stage.

"I am honored and humbled to navigate this new assignment," says Cummings-Martin. "I express my gratitude to interim president Beard for the opportunity, and look forward to serving."

FAMU is in the midst of a presidential search with the goal of having a new president in place by this summer.
