FAMU VP/AD Angela Suggs turned herself in at the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday after being charged with falsifying travel vouchers and misusing a work credit card, while CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF), according to a months-long investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The alleged violations occurred nearly three years ago in 2022.
FDLE alleges that Suggs racked up $24,000 in personal expenses on the credit card during business trips, and didn't fully reimburse FSF for the expenses. Additionally, FDLE alleges that Suggs falsified her travel vouchers to cover up some of the expenses.
The investigation, which began in November, came just two months after Suggs was appointed to her current position at FAMU. Suggs posted a $13,500 bond and was released shortly after.
- One felony count of grand theft
- One felony count of scheme to defraud
- Four misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers
Many students, alumni, and supporters are questioning the timing of the charges—coming amid fierce opposition to the university’s “president-select” Marva Johnson, a GOP-connected telecom executive with close ties to Governor Ron DeSantis. Johnson’s appointment has been met with intense backlash from FAMU stakeholders, with over 18,000 people signing a petition opposing her appointment.
“This feels like a carefully orchestrated political "witch hunt, a distraction,” said one FAMU alum on an online forum. “These allegations are tied to supposed actions from nearly three years ago. Why are they coming to light now—right as we challenge a politically connected appointment?”
"We have seen this same type of hit job before."
