FAMU is proposing a 15% tuition increase for out-of-state, graduate, and law students, effective Fall 2026. The proposal, is on the agenda of the FAMU Board of Trustees for their September 18, 2025 meeting, follows the Florida Board of Governors’ June 2025 authorization allowing state universities to adjust tuition rates. FAMU opted to delay the increase by one year to provide families additional time to prepare financially.

FAMU last raised tuition in 2013, cited rising operational costs and the need to maintain academic quality as driving factors. “This increase will help meet operational demands, preserve student services, enhance student learning experiences, and ensure all students contribute equitably to escalating instructional costs,” said Nichole Murry, FAMU’s acting chief financial officer.

Despite the proposed hike, FAMU remains one of the nation’s most affordable institutions. Current in-state tuition and fees average $12,548.65 per semester (15 credits/on-campus), while out-of-state students pay $18,492.70—both figures well below national averages. Approximately 77% of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, reducing the average net cost to $11,558.00 after grants and scholarships.

The tuition proposal comes amid broader debates about college affordability. FAMU emphasized its commitment to accessibility, noting expanded aid programs and partnerships to offset costs for low-income students.

If approved by trustees, the increase mark the first adjustment in over a decade. Stakeholders, including student groups and faculty unions, are expected to weigh in during public comment sessions ahead of the September vote.
