The redesigned FAMU plate will be available for purchase at county tax collector offices and local tag agencies across Florida beginning in later this month, the university announced.
“After much anticipation, we are excited to unveil the new FAMU vanity license plate for use in the state of Florida,” said FAMU Interim President Timothy L. Beard. “This design is a fresh take on the Rattler tradition of expressing our love for FAMU in everything we say, do, and drive. We invite all of the FAMUly in the Sunshine State to order the new license plate. Let’s ride with Rattler Pride and support student scholarships.”
The new tag marks the first major update since 1996, when FAMU adopted the now-familiar orange band design. That version was itself a refresh of the original Centennial plate introduced in 1987 to commemorate the University’s 100th anniversary.
FAMU’s specialty plate enjoyed strong popularity in the early 2000s, at one point ranking as the fourth most purchased specialty plate in the state. In recent years, however, sales have waned, with the tag currently sitting at 41st among Florida’s specialty license plates.
University officials hope the updated design will reignite interest and spark a new wave of support for the school. All proceeds from the $25 annual specialty tag fee go directly to support student scholarships at FAMU.
Florida drivers interested in purchasing the new plate are encouraged to make an appointment at their local tag office. Current holders of the older plate can also request the updated version.
“Every plate sold helps a Rattler achieve their dreams,” Beard said. “This is more than just a tag—it’s a show of pride and an investment in our students’ future.”
