The FAMU campus is buzzing with energy this week as hundreds of new and returning students began moving into on-campus housing ahead of the fall semester, set to start August 25. The university’s residence halls, including the newly opened Venom Landing, will welcome over 3,000 students during the annual move-in period, which launched Monday at 8 a.m.
Among them was freshman Chloe Collins, who arrived eager to embrace independence and campus life. “Being away from home and decorating your space exactly how you want is so much fun,” Collins said, grinning as she unloaded belongings outside Polkinghorne Village. “Meeting my roommate and diving into classes—I’m ready for the challenge and excited to learn.”
William Hudson, Jr., FAMU’s Vice President of Student Affairs, highlighted the contagious enthusiasm of move-in week. “This fresh energy sets the tone for the year,” he said. “We’ve planned activities to help students adjust—from connecting with advisors to locating classrooms and securing textbooks. Their excitement lifts everyone’s spirits.”
Venom Landing, the university’s latest housing complex, has significantly expanded on-campus capacity, offering modern amenities to meet growing demand. Hudson emphasized the importance of fostering community through events like welcome mixers, academic resource fairs, and campus tours designed to ease transitions for newcomers.
As students hauled mini-fridges, laptops, and bedding into dorms, faculty and volunteers staffed check-in stations, distributing key cards and answering questions. “Move-in is always chaotic, but it’s a beautiful chaos,” said junior resident assistant Jordan Miller. “You see friendships forming in real time.”
Classes begin this Monday (August 25). For now, the focus remains on settling in—students like Collins are already envisioning their paths. “FAMU feels like home,” she said. “I can’t wait to see what this year brings.”
