The FAMU Board of Trustees voted on Thursday to award a $30,000 bonus to former interim President Timothy Beard, representing 7.5% of his annual salary of $400,000. The decision, made during a meeting on campus, followed extensive discussions and a mixed evaluation of Beard’s performance during his year-long tenure.

Beard, who stepped into the role during a tumultuous period for the university, was eligible for a bonus of up to 15%, which could have amounted to $60,000. However, the board ultimately settled on the lower figure after deliberating on the complexities of his leadership.

Trustee Belvin Perry, who chairs the governance committee, acknowledged the challenges Beard faced upon his appointment. “When we made Dr. Beard interim president, he came to this university in a time of flux and a time where we had what was probably one of the most embarrassing moments in my recent history with the university,” Perry stated, referencing the fallout from a fraudulent multi-million dollar donation that had made national headlines.

Perry emphasized Beard’s efforts to stabilize the institution during a critical juncture. “He came in, he did the best he could to steady the ship, and he was even recommended by some people,” he said. “The man deserves a bonus for the things he did in steering us through this time to get us to where we are now.”

The board's decision was not without controversy. Beard’s evaluation included personal critiques that reflected a divided opinion on his leadership style and effectiveness. Despite the mixed reviews, Trustee Natalie Figgers defended the bonus, framing it as a recognition of Beard’s professionalism and integrity. “This is about more than money. It’s about the principle, and showing our team members—including leadership—that their work matters,” Figgers remarked.

The discussions surrounding Beard’s bonus highlight the ongoing divide inside the FAMU BOT as it seeks to navigate its reputation and restore trust following recent controversies including its presidential search.

Beard’s tenure, while marked by challenges, has also been characterized by efforts to foster stability and progress and decency with a student centered focus.  As one alum said, "Tim Beard tried to do what's right, not wha't easy!"
