The FAMU men's basketball team dominated Edward Waters in 100-54 exhibition game last night in the Lawson Center.

The real takeaway from the Rattlers’win was the arrival of a system, a style, and a leader — Charlie Ward.

In his first game as head coach at FAMU, the former Heisman Trophy winner and Florida State icon presided over a clinic of unselfish, up-tempo basketball that left little doubt about his vision for this program. The Rattlers shot a blistering 60 percent from the field, connected on 53 percent of their three-point attempts, and dished out 22 assists in a performance that felt more like a statement than a tune-up.

“We wanted to come out and set the tone for how we’re going to play — with energy, effort, and togetherness,” Ward said afterward, his voice even-keeled but his eyes bright with satisfaction. “I’m proud of how our guys shared the ball and stayed locked in from start to finish.”

From the opening tip, FAMU played with a cohesion and intensity that belied the exhibition setting. Ten different players scored, led by Anquan Boldin’s 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Jaquan Sanders buried four three-pointers on his way to 12 points, while reserves Micah Octave and Lenard Taylor each added 11. Jordan Chatman also finished with 12 points and three assists, underscoring the team’s depth and unselfishness.

The Rattlers’ defensive pressure was just as impressive. They forced 20 turnovers, converting them into 28 points, and racked up 23 fast-break points — a testament to the conditioning and mindset Ward has instilled since his hiring last spring.

After taking a 39–24 lead into halftime, FAMU erupted for 61 second-half points, stretching the lead to as many as 46. Edward Waters, led by Gabe Guilford’s 12 points and Keshawn Evans’s 11, simply had no answer for the onslaught.

“This is just the beginning,” Boldin said. “Coach Ward has us believing in each other and playing for each other. When we play like that, we’re tough to beat.”

The Rattlers won’t have long to celebrate. They travel across town Sunday for a 4 p.m. exhibition at Florida State — a matchup brimming with symbolism and opportunity.

If Tuesday was any indication, Charlie Ball is here. And it’s going to be fun to watch.
