For the 80th time, the FAMU Rattlers and the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats will meet on the gridiron, this time under the lights of Camping World Stadium in one of college football’s most storied HBCU rivalries: the Florida Blue Florida Classic.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday on ESPN+, with festivities spanning the weekend, including the Florida Classic Consortium Kickoff Luncheon and the Battle of the Bands on Friday, and a Fan Fest on game day.
The Rattlers (5-5, 4-2 SWAC) enter with confidence, not only holding a commanding 54-24-1 series advantage but also bringing a disciplined, analytically sound team that has excelled in limiting mistakes. Quarterback R.J. Johnson III has been among the most efficient passers in the Football Championship Subdivision, completing 65.8% of his throws for 2,086 yards.
“We’re focused on execution, not emotion,” said FAMU head coach James Colzie III. “This game is about preparation.”
Bethune-Cookman (5-6, 4-3), meanwhile, relies on offensive explosiveness. Quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom has thrown for 1,743 yards and 13 touchdowns, with receiver Maleek Huggins ranking among national leaders with 808 receiving yards.
But the Wildcats’ defense has struggled, ranking near the bottom of the FCS in several categories, including red-zone defense, where they allow scores on 94.7% of opponent drives.
“We know what we’re up against,” said Bethune-Cookman head coach Raymond Woodie, Jr. “It’s going to come down to which team imposes its will.”
Beyond the action on the field, the Classic serves as a cultural touchstone, drawing alumni and fans from across the country. The Battle of the Bands—a highlight for many—will take place Friday evening, showcasing the musical excellence synonymous with both institutions.
