FAMU’s late rally falls short as Alabama State claims SWAC Championship crown

For seven innings, the FAMU Rattlers were searching for a spark, trying to solve the relentless offensive machine that was the Alabama State Hornets. Then, as the late afternoon shadows stretched across historic Richwood Field in Birmingham, they finally found it. A single here, a defensive miscue there, and suddenly, a six-run deficit felt surmountable.

But in the end, the mountain was just a little too steep, and the clock ran out on a storybook comeback.

The Alabama State Hornets, riding a torrent of timely hitting and a back-breaking three-run homer, held off a furious late charge from the Rattlers to capture the 2026 SWAC Baseball Championship with an 8-6 victory Sunday afternoon. The Hornets (34-21) secured the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the Rattlers (30-23) were left to ponder what might have been after a gritty, but ultimately unfinished, fight to the final out.

The Rattlers, champions of resiliency all season, were plagued by errors on what should have been a routine inning-endings allowing a  double play and two unearned runs to score, and missed opportunities.  “We had our chances earlier,” said FAMU senior infielder William Brown. “Against a good team like that, you can’t wait. We almost made it work, but ‘almost’ doesn’t get you a ring.”

It is a painful lesson for the Rattlers in the fine margins of championship baseball—a game of inches and moments, where one pitch, one swing, one defensive play can etch joy or heartbreak into memory.
