For a few fleeting moments Thursday evening, the members of FAMU's women's 4x100-meter relay team -- consisting of Janaree Kinchen, Diandranique Gaines, Kiersten Clark and anchor Arayana Ladson--- waited anxiously for the final results to appear on the scoreboard, hopeful that a season defined by perseverance and speed would earn one more race on college track and field's biggest stage.
Instead, the margin between celebration and disappointment proved to be painfully small.
The Rattlers finished 11th overall in the semifinal round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, posting a time of 43.455 seconds and narrowly missing a spot in the national final by fractions of a second.
Only nine teams advanced to Saturday's championship race. The final qualifying position went to Florida State, which crossed the finish line in 43.23 seconds, leaving FAMU less than three-tenths of a second shy of extending its season.
The result was a difficult ending for a relay squad that had emerged as one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's premier sprint units and earned its place among the nation's elite programs at Hayward Field.
Despite the disappointment, the Rattlers' appearance at the NCAA Championships marked another significant achievement for a program that continues to gain national prominence. Competing alongside powerhouse programs from conferences such as the SEC, ACC and Big Ten, FAMU demonstrated that it belonged on collegiate track and field's grandest stage.
The relay team's performance capped a season of steady progress and underscored the growing strength of the university's sprint program.
FAMU also saw its hopes for an individual national final come to an end in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
Senior hurdler Leonard Mustari was unable to secure one of the qualifying positions for the championship race, ending a season in which he established himself among the nation's top performers in the event.
Although neither entry advanced to the finals, FAMU's presence at the NCAA Championships represented a milestone for the program and highlighted the continued rise of the Rattlers in national track and field competition.
