FAMU set to welcome another academically strong freshman class

FAMU is preparing to welcome what university leaders describe as one of the most academically accomplished freshman classes in recent memory, a cohort that reflects both the institution's rising national profile and the increasingly competitive nature of admission to the state's only public historically Black university.

The incoming Class of 2030 arrives with an average high school core grade-point average of 3.9, an average SAT score of 1120 and an average ACT score of 23 — figures that continue a yearslong trend of academic strengthening among first-time-in-college students.

The class was selected from a record applicant pool of more than 32,000 students, underscoring the university's growing appeal among high-achieving students nationwide.

For FAMU, the milestone represents a evolution. Once focused primarily on expanding access, the university now finds itself balancing that mission with increasing selectivity as demand far outpaces available seats.

University officials told trustees this week past that the academic profile of incoming students has improved across nearly every measurable category.

Perhaps most striking is the number of students arriving with substantial college experience already in hand.

More than 1,500 admitted students participated in dual-enrollment programs while in high school. Some completed only a few college credits before graduation. Others earned as many as 60 credit hours — the equivalent of two years of college coursework — and, in some cases, graduated from high school with an associate degree already completed.  This is an area that the university will continue to focus on, VP for Student Affairs William Hudson told Trustees.  We want to add more student coming from high school with their AA, to help reduce their undergraduate debt and time at FAMU.

Those students are expected to play a key role in helping the university achieve performance goals established under the State University System of Florida's 2030 strategic plan, which emphasizes graduation rates, workforce readiness and student success metrics.

"This class is uniquely positioned to accelerate student achievement outcomes," Hudson  told trustees, noting that students entering with significant college credits often progress more quickly toward degree completion.

The strong academic profile is being matched by enrollment momentum.

As of June, FAMU had secured 2,105 enrollment deposits for Fall 2026, compared with 1,880 at the same point a year earlier. The increase of approximately 12 percent suggests that interest in attending the university continues to grow despite rising competition among colleges nationwide for a shrinking pool of high school graduates.

FAMU had already processed housing and financial aid packages for a majority of these potential students to increase its show rate.

The university's enrollment strategy increasingly extends beyond traditional freshman recruitment.

Administrators recently expanded efforts aimed at transfer students, military-affiliated learners and workforce education participants. New recruitment initiatives will focus on building stronger pipelines from some of Florida's largest state colleges, including Tallahassee State College,  Valencia College, Broward College, Florida State College at Jacksonville and Hillsborough Community College.

The strategy reflects a broader recognition that the future of enrollment growth may depend as much on transfer pathways as on first-time freshmen.

FAMU recruiters are also deepening engagement community colleges across Florida, seeking to strengthen relationships with counselors, prospective students.

Hudson said, FAMU is laser focused on converting students' academic promise and improving its four-year graduation rate from its current 44 percent to its goal of 63 percent. Hudson said this will also help with our research achievements and career outcomes that match the aspirations of a university seeking to cement its place among the nation's premier public institutions.
