FAMU and Southern University will meet this afternoon at Bragg Memorial Stadium in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup that offers both programs an opportunity to gain momentum during the closing stretch of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, with the game available on HBCU GO.
The Rattlers are 2-6 overall and 1-3 in SWAC play, looking to capitalize on familiar surroundings as they attempt to turn their season in a more positive direction. With the conference schedule winding down, each remaining opportunity carries added importance.
Southern enters the match up with a 3-5 overall record and the same 1-3 mark in conference play. The Jaguars are navigating their first season under Marshall Faulk, the former NFL standout and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who took over as head coach.
Faulk's team is coming off a difficult road loss, falling 24-21 to Texas Southern. The narrow defeat leaves Southern looking for a response against a Florida A&M program that has historically enjoyed success in the series.
The Rattlers hold a 33-26-1 advantage in the all-time matchup and have been particularly successful in recent years, winning seven of the eight meetings since 2011.
That history provides an interesting backdrop, but Saturday's contest will be decided by the teams on the field now. For FAMU, the challenge is turning its home-field advantage into a conference victory. For Southern, the opportunity is to secure a road win and give its first-year coach another important step in building the program.
With identical conference records, the matchup offers both teams a chance to make a statement before the season reaches its conclusion.
