The interim president of Florida A&M University assured state legislators Monday the payroll problems that sparked walkouts by some campus employees are being fixed.

But FAMU interim President Castell Bryant said 66 of the university's 455 unpaid employees are still waiting and that the university lacks proper paperwork for 43 of them. She said the university has a long history of payroll glitches, which a succession of faculty representatives quickly vouched for.

  1. Just because something has a "long history" is not an excuse for it to continue. In fact, when you are aware of the history of a wrong and you are in a position of authority you have an obligation to fix it. Was there only one "Ghost" employee? No. As long as unqualified people are hired because they are a friend of a friend, friend of a dean, etc. and people remain on the payroll who should not have been on it, the payroll "glitch" will remain.

  2. She is right...this has gone on for many years, including the "Glory Years" as some suggest here

  3. "Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-North Miami Beach, who heads the joint committee, said the panel will wait for a complete audit of FAMU's payroll problems before taking any action in the controversy."

I almost feel like this is BS... Why do they need to wait? The Legistlative Joint Audit Committee needs to go in with some qualified people and straighten this mess out. If we keep doing what we've already done then we'll keep getting what we've always gotten. Cassie has had plenty of time and allegedly had reconciled the ailments of FAMU. So maybe we should try something else.

So they wait and then 6/1/07 the audit comes back dirty as hell and then what? The legislature is no longer in session and who's going to give a crap at that point? I don't see a special session to address FAMU happening?

This needs to fixed or at least placed on a more direct, specific, DETAILED plan Right "Effing" Now while we have the presence of the legislature in town. The legislature should be concerned about trying to get his mess straightened before the new president begins even if the only reason is to stop the bitching and complaints coming from the Hill. It is certainly in everyone's best interest.

  4. exactly. A long history of badly managed buildings that are NOW falling apart is one thing.

FAMU taking STATE money and then GIVING it to students is not something that "builds up" over the years. Either you can do it or you cannot. The money is reset every year with the new budget.

Concerning payroll, all FAMU is is a middleman. You were charged to fix it and everyone claimed you had fixed it. Therefore, anything that happens from that point forward is on your head.

  5. Castell rode in on a white horse 26 months ago claiming to be a saviour and proven to be nothing more than a sham! She's a bigger snake oil salesman than Bobby Lee. Off with her head!!!!!

  6. Yes, the payroll ineptitude has been around for years, but not to this degree. I know that to any "degree" is totally unacceptable if you are one of the affected ones, but close to 700 people? It simply doesn't make sense, and Dr. Bryant must be held accountable. Bottom Line.

  7. FAMU has never had 700+ people go without pay. This is clearly worst than anything we've ever seen. The situation is getting worst not better.

  8. The worse! ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE!!!

  9. In faculty meeting today we learned that a former student (Sandy M. Thomas) will be the "Dean of Students".

A student who did not pass the bar the first time and just took it again this week.

As a student in my class she was always missing class, had a bad attitude most of the time and not very bright or sharpe.

It is a shame that the Registrar and the Admissions Director have to report to a recent graduate who does not like either of them. The Admissions Director and Registrar need to look for another job.

Witherspoon does not care about neither one of you so please don't sit around and think she is in your best interest. Find another job before accredition.

The university is not suppose to hire or fire anyone until the new President arrives. Witherspoon did not consider noone from inside the COL for the position.

  10. Castell should never ever use the words "OLD-AGE" again. These words should be stricken from her vocabulary, although they describe her to a "T".

  11. To the above blogger: Castell has not used the phrase, "Old-Age" in her remarks. I believe she has consistently used the phrase, "age-old." There is a difference between the two phrases, but I get your drift.

  12. ^^^^^^
    To the previous bloggers:

Okay, she is aged and old.

  13. Conjoined in the same sentence, "aged" and "old" are redundant.

  14. We're covering more than one perspective and/or state. OLD, AGED.., OUT! How about that.
