Florida A&M will likely name Georgia State assistant Eugene Harris its new men's basketball coach soon. The FAMU search committee has completed its deliberations and Harris has emerged as the likely choice, said a person with close knowledge of the situation. "All that is left to be negotiated now is the terms of Mr. Harris' contract."Harris, a Florida State grad, has held assistant coaching positions at Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, and South Alabama.
Harris, who is regarded as an excellent recruiter, is expected to replace former FAMU Mens Basketball Coach Mike Gillespie who lead the Rattlers to their first 20 win season in more than a decade. FAMU finished last season with a record of 21-14 and 12-6 in conference play, winning the 2007 MEAC Basketball Tournament. They earned a NCAA Tournament berth against Niagara in the Opening Round Game in Dayton, Ohio. Gillespie was forced out as coach after he was charged with stalking.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the information, but based on my personal reading about the five person list Mr. Harris is the least qualified of the group. So I hope that we are not going back to the days of our basketball program being the laughing stalk of the entire state of Florida! Robert Kirby of Mississippi State or Greg Heair of Chipola Junior College should have been the next coach of FAMU Mens Basketball simply based on thier respective records and accomplisments. Mr. Harris being able to recurit is not that impressive compared to his inability to WIN!

The recent articles are good and well-written, but will we also be kept abreast of what is going on in Dr. Ammons' cabinet? I'm glad that we have moved from the damaging conversations, commentary and dialogue of the previous regime, but will we know what's going on at the university otherwise?

Maybe its because Dr. A's administration is a LOT more transparent than the previous mis-administration. I HOPE that you're not missing the negativity of the past.
Dr. Ammons need to replace the Athletic director. He is sabotaging the department with his poor management and leadership skills. Ammons needs to do something before the Tallahassee democrat do a story on the athletic department.
