U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been elected the 44th President of the United States. According to CNN, he has 338 electoral college votes to U.S. Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) 159.
His victory includes the state of Florida, where FAMU students came out to support him by the thousands. The university's Grand Ballroom precinct, in which most registered voters are students in on-campus housing, cast 2,182 votes for Obama. All in all, 83 percent of the precinct's voters turned out.
The Florida Department of State reports that the popular vote numbers are: McCain 3,872,553 and Obama 4,073,207.
The new president-elect is expected to announce his transition team and first appointments this week.
Barack Obama's victory crystallizes the American experience. He grew up in modest circumstances, excelled in school, reached for the stars, and, along the way, inspired millions more to accompnay him on the journey. The election of a man of color to the nation's highest office, only 44 years after Selma, shows that our nation is finally healing it racial wounds and is willing to look past race and color. The founding fathers wrote discrimination into the Constitution by stating black men were only 3/5ths of a man. Now it's time to rewrite history and present a young, fresh new multicultural face of America for the 21st century.

Time to hope again
Bush would have won a third term just like Clinton would have.
ReplyDeleteMcCain didn't energize the Republican base like Bush did and simply couldn't overcome the recessionary economic environment (which always favors democrats).
could have, would have, should have !!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a GREAT win for him and our country.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless
The sea of change would have swept Bush away just like it swept McCain away....For the first time ever, YOUNG African Americans actually VOTED!! I saw all types of African Americans voting the one's that "white" America has dismissed as thugs showed up to the polls and showed out when they voted Obama 08!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes we did vote for Obama because he is African American!!!!

ReplyDeleteCan you please stop the mindless racist banter? It took a whole lot of black AND white votes to vote Obama in. If you're always shouting for change and acceptance, why can't you realize when it's finally happened? Our country has come so far since the 60's and now we are all finally coming together as one voice and are learning to accept one another and be harmonious. You need to start leaving this kind of thinking at the door. Remember, Obama is 1/2 black and 1/2 white, so he represents us all, and not just African Americans.
African- Americans ARE bi racial. LOL Anything some will do to take away the signifigance. In order to have harmony, you must have more than one voice! It is true that we voted for Obama because he is the best, many made an effort this time because he is black. Otherwise to them its the same story over and over again. To some degree they are right. Black in America and the world over essentially means that you have visible African roots and because of our journey there is asian and/or caucasian blood. Barack is a Black Man who was definitely the Best man for the job.
ReplyDelete4:59 get real! Racist banter? You are really ignorant and its okay because for one time in the whole history of America it does not matter! My President is BLACK/African-American!!!! His wife is BLACK African-American and his beautiful children are BLACK African American!!!!! That is the history of America sir! Since African-Americans gained the right to vote they always had to vote for a white man, the only choices that they had were white and now you have the gall to tell me what to do and how to do it? How bout you go to HE*L!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t mean to me or any African American what it may or may not mean to a white person and I still thank them for voting for change over the same. I truly do, but this does not absolve America from still coming up short in the arena of race and its treatment of African Americans so get real and attack real racist! And while you are at it look up and learn the definition!
And if you are Black simply put how sad....
Obama is African American, but his wife is Black American. I've gotten to a point that I'm sick of the term "African American". What is wrong with just being a Black American? That's what I am and I resent being labeled an African American. There is no shame in being black.
ReplyDeleteI'm Black And Proud!!!

ReplyDeleteI was not trying to take away any significance, but rather trying to remind that ignorant poster that America has come so far and has proven so much that perhaps its time to leave the race card at the door and focus on finally moving on as a country and a nation as one voice.
Only 550k more people voted for Obama than they did Bush in 2004.
