The People's Union USA, a grassroots organization, is spearheading a national boycott dubbed an "economic blackout" this Friday, urging Americans to refrain from shopping for 24 hours. This initiative follows the recent rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at several major companies, including Target. The boycott aligns with ongoing protests against President Donald Trump's proposed reductions to the government workforce and mass firings at federal agencies.
In a powerful message shared via Instagram, the group stated, "For generations our families worked, sacrificed, and fought to build a better future, yet here we stand, still waiting. We the people will not wait any longer. We stand in solidarity to honor the past and carve a new path for the future."
While the boycott has gained significant traction on social media and is being promoted internationally, its potential impact on retail sales and corporate profits remains uncertain. John Schwarz, the founder of the organization, emphasized that the movement is not centered around any single individual, including billionaire Elon Musk, who oversees the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), or Trump. Instead, he stated, "Our goal is to unite Americans against the corruption and greed that has kept us struggling for decades," focusing on "the system as a whole."
The People's Union USA has pledged to continue its efforts until corporations are held accountable, billionaires contribute their fair share, and the working class achieves the freedom it deserves. The boycott, which commenced at midnight Friday, encourages participants to abstain from all purchases, including gas and fast food, while promoting support for local and small businesses. Essential items such as medicine and food can still be purchased.
The group clarified that the date for the boycott was not chosen for any specific historical significance, asserting that this economic blackout is merely the beginning of their campaign. Looking ahead, they have announced plans for a week-long blackout against Amazon in March, urging consumers to avoid shopping at the retailer, Whole Foods, and brands owned by Nestlé, citing concerns over "water exploitation, child labor, and corporate greed."
As the movement gains momentum, the People's Union USA aims to galvanize public support for systemic change, challenging the status quo and advocating for a more equitable economic landscape.
