FAMU is pursing a $1 million in recurring state funding to transform its award-winning School of Journalism and Graphic Communication (SJGC) into a hub for entertainment, film, and digital media innovation. The initiative, university leaders say, aims to leverage FAMU’s cultural legacy and academic strengths to position the institution as a national leader in creative storytelling and digital content production.

The proposed investment, outlined in FY2026 Legislative Budget Request to state lawmakers, would expand the school’s film, narrative, and digital media programs. Provost Allison Watson   emphasized that the funding would enable FAMU to further elevate its profile as leading research university and center for cultural innovation while fostering talent pipelines for Florida’s booming entertainment industry.

“FAMU’s cultural impact and creative legacy are unmatched,” Watson said. “This investment isn’t just about equipment or facilities—it’s about empowering the next generation of storytellers, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs who will shape the future of media.”

Plans for the funding
The recurring $1 million would support four key enhancements:

  1. State-of-the-Art Production Tools: Upgrading to professional-grade cameras, editing suites, and audio equipment to give students hands-on experience with industry-standard technology.

  2. Industry Partnerships: Launching mentorship programs and workshops led by entertainment professionals, including alumni working at major studios and streaming platforms.

  3. New Academic Programs: Expanding course offerings in scriptwriting, content entrepreneurship, and multimedia storytelling, with a focus on diverse narratives.

  4. Multimedia Lab: Creating a collaborative studio space for students to develop projects spanning podcasts, short films, virtual reality, and social media content.

Dean of the SJGC, Mira Lowe, noted that the initiative aligns with FAMU’s “Boldly Striking Strategic Plan,” which prioritizes innovation and community engagement. “We’re not just training journalists—we’re cultivating creators who can thrive in a rapidly evolving media landscape,” Lowe said.

A strategic push for Florida’s creative economy
The appeal comes as Florida’s film, television, and digital media sectors rebounds from pandemic-era disruptions, fueled by tax incentives and increased demand for streaming content. FAMU, which counts a bevy of (regional) Emmy-winning journalist among its alumni, argues that its programs can help meet industry demands while amplifying underrepresented voices.

"FAMU would be a central pipeline in creating homegrown talent for Florida,” said Lowe. “Our students are already producing award-winning work. With this funding, we can scale their impact.”

State legislators are expected to review the request during Florida’s 2026 budget negotiations. If approved, FAMU would join a growing roster of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) investing in media programs, such as Howard University’s partnership with Netflix and Spelman College’s documentary film lab.

Cultural impact and beyond
Supporters say the initiative also honors FAMU’s role in shaping Black culture through media. The university’s student-run newspaper, The Famuan, and its radio station, WANM, have long served as training grounds for journalists and broadcasters. Recent projects, like a student-produced docuseries on Florida’s hip-hop history, underscore the school’s commitment to community-centered storytelling.

“FAMU has stories that the world needs to hear,” said senior journalism major Aaliyah Carter, who interns at a Miami-based production company. “This funding would open doors for students like me to tell them in bold, new ways.”

FAMU's efforts are already backed by The Walt Disney Company through a five-year $1 million grant that established the Disney Storytellers Fund to empower future storytellers.
