Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold. On a warm Wednesday night at the SWAC tournament in Atlanta, the FAMU Rattlers served it up with stifling defense and relentless hustle.

Exorcising the demons of two regular-season losses, the Rattlers engineered a commanding 70-60 victory over Jackson State University, punching their ticket to the semifinals and proving that the third time’s the charm when it matters most.

“We didn’t forget,” said senior guard Antonio Baker, who led all FAMU scorers with 14 points. “We carried those two losses with us. They fueled us every day in practice. Tonight wasn’t about X’s and O’s; it was about heart.”

That heart was on full display from the opening tip. FAMU’s game plan was clear: attack the rim, pressure the ball, and never let the Tigers get comfortable. The result was a masterclass in disruptive basketball. The Rattlers feasted on Jackson State’s mistakes, converting 27 points off turnovers and dominating the interior with 36 points in the paint.

While Baker provided the steady hand, it was a full-team effort that sealed the win. Tyler Shirley was a sparkplug off the bench, slicing through the lane for 13 crucial points as part of a 22-point outburst from the Rattler reserves.

“Our depth is our identity,” said Head Coach Charlie Ward. “When our bench gives us that kind of production, we’re to beat. Tyler, the whole second unit… they changed the game.”

Jackson State found no answers for FAMU’s revamped intensity. Every drive was contested, every pass was challenged. The Tigers came out the second half and led by as many as 6 points before the Rattlers responded and took the lead 46-45 on a Kaleb Washington lay up with 8:56 remaining in the game.    From there it was no looking back for the Rattlers.

The victory sets up a Friday night semifinal clash, keeping the dream of an automatic NCAA Tournament bid alive for the Rattlers. They’ve learned their lessons, paid their debts, and now, they’re playing with house money.

“We’re not done,” Shirley said, a towel draped over his shoulders and a determined look in his eyes. “We’ve been counted out all year. This is our time.”

For one night in Atlanta, the Rattlers weren’t just the better team, they were the hungriest. And in March, hunger trumps everything.
