The gift will support scholarships and band operations as the university seeks to raise an additional $2 million over three years.

Key Takeaways
  • A $2 million matching challenge. FAMU graduates Bernard and Shirley Kinsey will match eligible new donations to the Marching 100 dollar for dollar, doubling donor contributions up to $2 million.
  • Scholarships and operations are the priorities. The Kinseys’ commitment, $1.5 million will support an endowed fund for scholarships and operating needs, while $500,000 will provide more immediate support.
  • Three years to double the impact. Beginning Oct. 24, 2026, the 36-month challenge invites alumni, friends and supporters to contribute. There is no minimum gift required.

FAMU alumnus Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, yesterday, announced a $2 million matching challenge grant during FAMU’s 2026 Homecoming Convocation, seeking to strengthen financial support for the university’s celebrated Marching 100 band.

The Kinseys’ Marching “100” matching $2million challenge commitment is not an upfront cash donation. Rather, it represents the maximum amount they have pledged to contribute through a three-year matching challenge, with their actual contribution contingent on how much FAMU raises in eligible donations for the Marching 100 during the campaign.   Under the Kinsey matching gift campaign, the couple will match eligible new donations dollar for dollar, up to $2 million. For example, a new $100 contribution to the Marching 100, would generate $200; and $500 contribution would become $1000 in combined support for the band.

Brandi Tatum Fredrick, FAMU’s vice president for University Advancement, announced the initiative during the convocation. The 36-month campaign is designed to inspire an additional $2 million in philanthropic contributions from alumni, friends and supporters.

Under the Kinseys’ campaign they hope to establish a $1.5 million endowed fund benefiting band scholarships and operational needs covering expenses such as uniforms, instruments, equipment, and travel expenses. Another $500,000 is expected to go toward an expendable fund to provide more immediate assistance for scholarships and program priorities.

The challenge begins Oct. 24, 2026, and runs for three years. Eligible cash gifts and documented charitable pledges will qualify for dollar-for-dollar matching recognition, up to the $2 million limit. No minimum contribution is required.

The initiative underscores the Kinseys’ commitment to investing in FAMU students and sustaining the Marching 100’s tradition and legacy. It also gives donors at every level an opportunity to multiply their contributions and help preserve a defining part of the university experience.
