Florida A&M University made school history Saturday at the Tuscaloosa NCAA Regional softball tournament, defeating Mississippi Valley State 7-5 for its first-ever victory in a NCAA tournament.
The third-seeded Lady Rattlers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-all tie to advance to the evening elimination game.
Georgia Tech ended Florida A&M's season with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap. Georgia Tech, the No. 2 seed, was three outs away from a run-rule victory, but FAMU rallied for six runs off of the Yellow Jackets' third pitcher.
Saturday's lost to Georgia Tech was FAMU"s second in the double elimination tournament. FAMU had dropped a game to Geeorgia Tech on Friday in the opening round. The win over MVSU gave FAMU (40-25) its second 40-win season and first since setting a school record in 1997.
Wiggins named to NCAA Softball Committee
Florida A&M head softball coach Veronica Wiggins has been appointed to the NCAA Division One Softball Committee, it was learned Thursday.
Wiggins, a 15-year veteran coach at FAMU, will begin her four-year stint on the committee, which runs through 2010, this fall.
