As much of the Rattler Nation is anxiously awaiting details of the 2005 financial audit, there are a few things we thought we'd pass along regarding making a public records request at FAMU.
First, all such requests are routinely handled through the General Counsel's office (ask for Ms. Thomas). As is typically the case, FAMU charges five cents per page for copying requested documents. FAMU also COULD charge for staff time it takes to prepare the request. Now, if the requested info is already ready this cost should be minimal. You also have the right to ask for an estimate of the charges for the requested documents before hand. If you feel that the estimate is way out of hand, and that FAMU is just trying to persuade you not to make the public records request, then by all means, "the Attorney General's Office would like to hear about this".
Also, the Florida First Amendment Foundation is willing to help. The Florida First Amendment Foundation is an organization which helps protect and advance the public's constitutional right to know. The FAF phone is 850.222.3518 or toll free 1.800.337.3518. Their web address is: First Amendment Foundation
