Here's a photo of the 100rd at Saturday's game. The Marching 100 has undergone a Whitney Huston diet and slimmed downed to about 175 members this year after a few unfortunate missteps.
As a former member of the 100 (Fall 77) I thought the band's performance was great. I think so many of us are caught up with sheer numbers. There is so more to the 100 than size. Lets look at showmanship, precision, and the pagentry. These are the standards that the 100 has always been judged by.
While I didn't attend the game, I am a faculty member at the university, and I know first-hand how so many of the freshman and sophomore band members eat, live and breath "being in the band," much to the neglect of their academics. Many use the excuse that membership in the band should prelclude anything they have to do in the classroom. And while I am SO not a fan of CVB, some necessary things had to be done to ensure that the students whose gpa's fall below the minimum required, are held personally accountable for what they do and/or do not do in the classroom. We'll be alright. Ain' no love lost on the few missing members of the band. Excluding the members of the band who cut in Detroit, the band is a class act. Always has been and always will be.
I saw the band on the web and the looked great to me. I think Dr. White will have them more than ready for the ATL Classic, Homecoming and the Florida Classic, games in which most of us want the 100 to shine.
The band has been this size before. The band probably was smaller than this when it started getting famous. You're still in your seat for halftime, I bet. (Fall 2000)
Yes it was and still remains the "100". Check out anonymous @ 8:46 AM. Those comments were right on. If you have any doubt, then I presume that you are not really a fan of the "100". The 100's reputation was built on showmanship, precision, and pagentry. Not size.
fukk all that, it would still be nice to see 300 or 360 or mfs out there on the field representing FAMU and not have a which like Cast-hell destroying another one our university's proudest and most visable cymbols!!!!!
The Band was FINE Saturday ... All things considered ...
The Bigger Question should be ... Where the hell were the rest of YOU in the TLH - the Students, Faculty, Staff, etc.?
Two hours before Kickoff - That place looked like it could have been a Tuesday afternoon, with the lack of people, energy, or enthusiasm around the Campus.
Some of you may choose to want to place blame on all things happening to FAMU on one person, but the Truth is - There is an entire mindset that has permeated the Campus and its so called supporters for YEARS that is in need of an overhaul.

Southern University, Baton Rouge captured its first I-AA attendance title since 1992 by averaging 27,190 per game to outdistance the University of South Florida's second place total of 26,414. Yale University was third at 23,142, Delaware State University (21,154) was fourth and Florida A&M University (20,337) was fifth.
FAMU has been ranked in the top ten of all D1-AA schools since the early '90s; and in the last 7-8 years in the top five; and, number for #1 and #2 for the most well attended classics in D1-AA.
It's DIEHARD FANS and SUPPORTERS that keep this ranking consistant, not the Witch and her brew.
What's interesting is that decisions made by the "adiministration" DID NOT INCLUDE ANY sort of programmatic bolstering. If this was the athletic department, it wwould be a different tone of discussions on HOW TO BETTER THE ACADEMIC VITALITY OF ANY MEMBER NOW AND TO COME!I too am a former member of the marching band and a member of the MARCHING 100 and I see and hear things that are really a cancer to the family! Performance after performance and all that matters is the current (squeak-by)performance? What about the vitality of the organization and the culture within. Why is it not, still not, even for our band, not legitimate or legitimized for stability's sake. I still experience the band as a whole and NOT for the most recent edition along with its evergrowing bed of excuses and outright liar-magnetism attached. Instead of Fostering leadership! I'm tired of the disclaimer category. Again, if this were legit to the masses instead of a mass parade of a coon show(just an example of how some of us believe that others of us think about the band)i.e. athletics legacy, this would definitely be a different discussion alltogether! If you think we're dynamic, insure it! If you know we're dazzling, nurtue that! If we're amazing, expect to experience just that! If we're internationally renown, accomodate that! Innovate, not Impede. Improve, not Eliminate. Say it with me now...!
Not Ba-Ca-Ca!? We'll take that as a joke. Size is not the most important factor, but having three quarter backs is better than one. There are balances which are important to the innerworkings of the band. Remember that this is a disipline as well(flashback to FSU and TCC members) and the marching band is a class the members are ENROLLED in. Yes some would need this experience to go on to a PROFESSIONAL career in this area. ...And about the budget! Oh, that's ANOTHER discussion. tbc
As a memeber of the world famous (fall 2k3)I feel like too many people who don't understand clearly what the hundred is get caught up in the fact that there are not 400 people out there. To me, the band always sounds the same, ther are uniques qualities, and signatures that the hundred always maintains. For anyone who has never participated, and doesn't further understand what really goes on, should keep ther opinion to themsleves until they are further educated.
I agree. The small nuances that add to the entertainment value of the "100" is still there. The pride, pageantry and showmanship was still there as well. I was at the game. Even though the opposing team's football team intruded on the "100"'s halftime show, the "100" still supported a fallen player from the opposing football team later in the game. It was a classy move. Musicality and precision was never determined by how many people were in the ranks. But I think the occassional fan will always judge the band through such superficial criteria. I, for one, don't mind people getting kicked out for failing to make the grade. Afterall, you're at FAMU to graduate, not march. And if you can't do both simultaneously, you need to be in the stands.
I thought that it was BCC's band for a moment.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure traveling light is good for the budget, too.

I wish the 100rd would retire that LAME Motown show. I was LAME in Detroit and it was LAME last week and it was LAME again today.
ReplyDeleteBury that shit!
