Billy Joe enjoys football, watches SSU play

The MEAC's worst enemy, because he won sooo many games, former FAMU coach Billy Joe, was in Savannah this weekend watching the Savannah State Tigers take on Edward Waters College. SSU won the game 28-7.

Billy Joe is considered one of the best coaches in NCAA Division I-AA history. Seven of Joe's teams won Black College national championships - Central State five times, Florida A&M twice. Joe was 237-108-4 in 31 years as a head coach, including FAMU's 50-14 victory over SSU in 2004. He was 86-46 in 11 years with the Rattlers.

It seems new SSU head coach Ed Lemon played ball and coached under Joe.

Joe was fired by the Interim "Resident" (um President) on June 14, 2005, with two years left on his contract "due to violation of NCAA rules," according to the school. But the NCAA cleared Joe, and FAMU on probation for four years. Joe has filed a lawsuit against the University.

Joe spends his time these days working on a book about the "Gulf Coast Offense", working out ---he's lost 35 lbs---, and learning to cook.

  1. It's hard to believe we would have gotten our clocked cleaned by Hampton had Billy Joe been our coach.

Castell should have been fired not our coach!

  2. Just in... FAMU strikes a deal with the AWI's division of Unemployment to trade Billy Joe for Castell Bryant. Score.

  3. BilyJ looks good. The weight gain was due, I'm sure, to all of the stress and strain of the last few years, especially in the way that CVB did him dirty. I hope he settles that lawsuit soon. The man was treated horribly at the hands of the devil herself. (And I bet every Sunday she's sitting up in somebody's church, where, of course she oughts to be, whether it does her some good or not.

  4. The administration, led by Jim Corbin, destroyed our program with the misguided effort to move to Division 1 without any plan or research. We were dominating the MEAC under Billy Joe. Now we barely win, in OT no less, to these same teams. Losing 59-7 at home to any MEAC team is unacceptable.
