For the past however many months that the campaigning has been occurring, there have been a number of issues in the paper, some repeated a number of times with varying perspectives. Why have I only been able to find a handful of Black issues reported between the USA Today, NY Times, WSJ, and Tallahassee Democrat. Am I catching the newspaper on its off days? Or maybe I am facing the stark reality that the American majority is not focusing on the issues of the minority. But honestly, has there been an election since the 1968 elections that focused on Blacks' issues? And seeing how at that election, it was actually Blacks who were the issue, should that really count?
And to that man at FAMU trying to preach to the students how much holier the Democrats are than the Republicans, go back under the rock you crawled from under. Can we make it understood that our present situation was not caused by the evil Republicans waging a war against us poor Black folks. By present situation, I am referring to any and all complaints as well as compliments of this current system made by the sound majority of Blacks. It has been caused by a failure to stay active, to remain vigilant, and to press for changes.
We must ask ourselves - what exactly is our place in this nation? Will we be satisfied with a minority voice, in a nation where other minorities' voices are amplified by their Embassy. There is no Embassy for us. Our only method to be heard is to speak through voting, or any other socializing activity in which we engage. Most often we're met with resistance, which leads to feelings of discouragement for what we feel is our natural right to expression.
Do realize however, that it is 2006, and the "White Man" stopped plotting (now we face some harassment every now and again) against Blacks quite some time ago. If no one seizes the opportunity to get people under one accord then our voice will remain scattered and ignored.
What would be the best solution? Always supporting one party or another party in a two party system, which is either in a head lock between powers, or is overrun by one side, and therefore certain policies are passed. Or create a wedge, to create progress when there is a headlock, and prevent unchecked partisan bills.
Black issues are ignored because blacks vote as a block for democrats. Who cares what your issues are if we can always count on your vote?
Black issues, what ever they may be, will only be addressed when the black voting block is not a guarantee and therefore a political party/candidate must work hard to earn your support by addressing your issues.
I dream of the day when we talk about American issues, not _______-issues. I dream of a day when Americans drop their hyphens and become simply "Americans" living in one nation under God.
Unfortunately, there is no simply "American" when it comes to issues. You're labeled either right wing, left wing, conservative, liberal based on your beliefs, so there's really no way to say exactly what is American. Then, you have those "-Americans" who were called anything but American by those same Americans now in power. Do you also wish Iraqis would stop killing each other for what seems to be no reason as well? Maybe you don't have a deep enough understanding of history to see why this world is a group of minorities.
Why aren't Blacks out there addressing Black issues on a whole? If it is not possible to do it alone, then form up with the other minorities in the nation, handle problems individually, but work together collecvtively to find solutions.
Hold on, elections are over. Let's go hit the club, its the only thing we really know how to do as a whole.

Voting for Democrats is to "press for change!"
The Republicans have fought a raise in the minimum wage, healthcare for us all, and fiscal conservatism when it affects their rich friends and donors.
The Democrats have promised to address the minimum wage and health care. They ran 5 times more black House of Representative candidates than the Republicans (41 Democrats versus 8 Republicans) and gave us the chance to elect our first black Lieutenant Governor. (I'm pretty sure Daryl Jones received more white votes than any black candidate in Florida's history.) The new governor of Massachussets is black, too.
The Republicans gave us Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and the war in Iraq. Closer to home, they gave us the FCAT, the Board of Governors, Jim Corbin, Challis Lowe, Debra Austin, and worst of all, Castell Vaughn Bryant!
As said before, the mark of a really great con is that the victim denies having been taken!
