Off Topic: Deval Patrick Elected Gov. of Mass.

Deval Patrick became the first black governor of Massachusetts and only the second black ever elected governor in any state. He is one of a new generation of African-American politicians who are changing old assumptions about what offices black candidates can win.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi is poised to become the first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives as Democrats are on track to take over come January. (It looks like Rattler Janell Carter former speech writer for House Speaker Dennis Hasert, now with Condi Rice, bounced just in time. )
Control of the U.S. Senate was still up for grabs at press, ummm bedtime.
In Florida...
While overall Democrats had a good night in much of the nation, Republicans coasted to victory, all most uncontested, in Florida. Charlie Crist swept challenger Jim Davis picking up nearly 15% of the African American vote. In fact, Republicans won all statewide races with the exception of state Chief Financial Officer and U.S. Senate.
Let's hope, Mr. Crist is a different kind of Republican than Jeb. Hey Charlie! Call me!
Good to see FAMU alum Kendrick Meek standing behind the speaker-designate. Maybe he'll get a new, powerful committee chairmanship under the Democratic-run House. This makes his star a little brighter in the Party.
ReplyDeleteI wish the best for FAMU alums Alcee Hastings and Corrine Brown as well.
Let's ask the governor-elect to intervene and help clean up the so-called Clean Up Woman's mess.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't going to ask the governor-elect to do any such thing. Let the man get in office before we start bombarding him with appeals. CVB will be gone two months after Mr. Tan Man gets in office. A more appropriate request would be for him to initiate whatever measures he can to move the Martin Lee Anderson case along. the MLA case is far more important at the time and demands more attention NOW than what CVB is doing and/or not doing. Let us stick to the primary battle here. Long after CVB is gone, the effects of the MLA case will still bear an emotional spot in all our hearts. Let us not forget. CVB has four months left. Martin Lee Anderson has no months left. Let's petition or do what we can to ensure that this young African American boy is not forgotten.
ReplyDeleteBryant's supporters are working on a coup to try and extend her stay.
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't plan to go ANYWHERE!
Keep her out, Charlie!
Another big breaking news story: Donald Rumsfield has just resigned as DOD Secretary.
ReplyDeleteAnd along with this, the Dems are one seat short of the Senate majority.
It looks like political change agents in Florida are going to be even more emboldened by the national developments.
I hope Condi runs for some high office in 2008. We need blacks represented on both sides of the aisle. I think she is popular enough amongst republicans to win whatever office she wanted.
ReplyDeleteA coup, you say? Of the conspiracy kind to keep the devil on board? Heavens! Say it ain't so! Now, is there any kind of proof of this private uprising, or is this just another one of those community-type reports, as in "That's what I heard, that's what THEY say" stories? Give up the goods on this latest sheSay/heSay gossip, my friend. You gotta come with the Johnny Walker--as in Proof. Holla.
ReplyDeleteWonder what this means for the FAMU COL ... In the midst of all of the in-fighting among the questionable faculty ... We must be reminded that in 1993, as a member of the state Senate education committee, Crist voted AGAINST a new law school associated with Florida A & M University (former speaker of the House Willie Logan was quietly behind the "no" vote because he and his wife were tapped administer the multi-million $$$$ scholarship fund to encourage us to go to law school).
ReplyDeleteFAMU COL would not be open had it not been for the Cubans and the powerful Diaz-Balart family (Castro's former kin) in Miami who lobbied for a school at FIU, creating a racial controversy across the aisles for both parties. The sponsors of the FIU proposal, expecting a similar defeat as FAMU, withdrew it before Crist's committee could vote. Wonder how the vote would have been?
After creating a united front w/HBCU FAMU and Hispanic FIU, in 2000, the Legislature approved both schools. FIU appears to be in much better shape than FAMU w/a good scholarly faculty and better bar passage rates.
The FAMU COL faculty need to take note and get it together. This could be the beginning of the end for most of them.

ReplyDelete"Crist's win puts 'Noles in office
FSU happy leaders have university ties"
Charlie Crist, Florida's newly elected governor, and running mate Jeff Kottcamp both received undergraduate degrees at FSU, where Crist was student body vice president. As active alumni, they have returned to campus to teach, chat with students and cheer on the Seminoles.
