Dorothy Bland, the former publisher of the Ft. Collin Coloradoan newspaper, has been named director of the division of journalism at FAMU. Bland was one of only handful of black women publishers at a daily newspaper when she resigned in September 2005.
James Hawkins, Dean, School of Journalism and Graphic Communications, told Journal-ism, an online blog by the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, that he met Bland during an educators conference in San Francisco last summer and invited her to interview for the post. He said he was impressed by her experience, particularly "with the whole issue of convergence at the highest levels in the newspaper business," a reference to cross-training journalists to work in more than one medium.
The Ft. Collins Coloradoan is a Gannett newspaper, the same company that owns the Tallahassee Democrat and USAToday. Bland took over the journalism division on Jan 2. As a Gannett publisher, Bland was a three-time president’s ring winner for excellence based on work at the Coloradoan.
The Ft. Collins Coloradoan has a staff of about 250 employees and a daily circulation of about 29,000/ 35,000 Sunday. By constrast, the Tallahasseee Democrat has a daily circulation of about 51,000/ 67,000 Sunday.
