Enrollment, fundraising to be early focus for Ammons

"We have to work on the enrollment, rebuilding the enrollment," said Ammons, who will start by recruiting high-school students in Leon, Gadsden and Jefferson counties and go on from there.

"I want to do a lot of listening," said Ammons of his first 100 days at FAMU. He anticipates having plenty of conversations before developing a strategic plan for how his presidency will move the university forward.

Already, Ammons has asked for homework - FAMU audits, financial statements, accreditation documents, program reviews and endowment information.

"We also need to pay a lot of attention to the fiscal integrity of the university," Ammons said of a pressing priority for him.

"And our fundraising," Ammons said of something else he'll dive into right away. "Our fundraising has to be reinvigorated to rebuild connections with our donor base to motivate the corporate sector, foundations and individuals."

Don't expect big, bold initiatives right away. Getting FAMU's house in order will come first, he said.

"Before we start talking about building new programs and institutes, I want to have the opportunity to look at the performance and productivity of existing programs," Ammons said. Issues like accreditation of the university and of the pharmacy college are on his mind.

  4. He needs to work on out of state recruiting. That made up a significant portion (25%+) of the school's total population and the majority of the students in Journalism, SBI, and Pharmacy. The increases in out of state tuition have really hurt FAMU in this area.
