Carter just wanted to " keep it close"

The Bulldogs exposed every deficiency in the Rattlers' game plan. A national television audience watched it, with 21,525 in the stadium.

FAMU finished with 198 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs' 611 yards wiped out an old record for total yards allowed by the Rattlers. Morgan State was the only other team to pile it up like that against FAMU - in 1992.

The Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1 in the MEAC) took advantage of a depleted FAMU defense in rushing for a season-high 405 yards and five touchdowns against the Rattlers (2-4, 1-2).

Three South Carolina State players rushed for more than 100 yards, led by starting running back William Ford who gained 142 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Cleveland McCoy rushed for 136 yards and backup running back Jonathan Woods rushed for 126 yards.

Detached coach wanted to keep it close
“Probably the most disappointing thing is not keeping it close,” FAMU coach Rubin Carter said. “(The rushing defense) is something that I'm going to personally look at myself. I'm going to sit in on meetings to make sure that things are the way they should be.

“It's assignment football. We were in position to make plays and we just didn't. . . . I just want to make sure assignment-wise we are doing what we are supposed to do.”

  1. Wow! All this time I thought the objective was to win the game, not keep it close.

    Coach Carter is clueless!

  2. ...and he's going to "personally look at..." how everything went awry. Whoa! I thought "looking at things personally" was what coaches did already/, and not something that needed to be stated. Carter needs to pack it up and follow CVB.

  3. Hey Rattlers, lets be realistic. We are starting a quarterback that is 5 feet 5 inches and a former walk on and backup (people are backups for a reason). Most of our defense is made up of freshman and sophomore and largely undersized (need for better facilities). The man is trying to build a program, not a team. Historically, go look at Lou Holtz' first three season's at Notre Dame, or even Steve Spurrior’s at UF, had there alumni and boosters had the same attitude that many of our faithful currently have we would never have a coach that lasted longer than three years (although coach Joe had an outstanding record in his third year, he was building teams and not a program). Honestly, I like what he is doing with the program, although I would like to win these games rather than lose them. Lets not forget that we are still on probation and still do not have a full allotment of scholarships. Therefore, everyone that he recruits has to play now. Please faithful, let’s not jump off of the bandwagon yet, give the man his first graduating class! Lets not do what the UF did to Zook and fire him before his seniors have a chance to develop, thus win a national championship. We are on our way baby, it just takes time and support. I support you Coach Carter!

  4. I'll get back on the wagon when Carter wakes up and realizes he is the head coach.

What the heck is he thinking?

  5. He is not thinking he is getting paid.

Have you seen Southern, Delaware State, Winston-Salem, or SC State's facilities?

    The don't compare to ours.

And, Carter recruited most of current players.

However, it ain't our players.... it's the coaching!

  7. In what way don't they compare, you mean they are better right? Lets look at the roster, or the starters, they are not Carter's guys they are Joe's guys. People, give the man a graduating class. I do agree that there is a need to change the OC or DC, but not the HC. On the TDO page some are saying that the right way to build a program is through transfers, but if that were the answer why were BJ's last couple of years only mediocre at best. Yes we all remember the years that we were winning 10 plus games, but what happens when you have 12 to 15 transfers with only one or two years eligibility. You are in an ever changing state of rebuilding rather than reloading, ie Hampton. Look, we all want to win, and we all want to win right now. If you ask the high school coaches in the state of Florida they will argue that he is doing it the right way, and my argument is the same. What happens if we go get another coach, and that coach doesn't get it done, will we say its time to get ride of him. Give Carter a few more years.

  9. I'm a former professional football player. And from my evaluation, this team has internal problems. Which means the coaches are not connecting with their players on a personal level.Just attend a practice when you get a chance and watch the student athletes body language.their displaying a non-chalant attitude. And until you get that corrected, this team seaon is over.

FAMU's facilities compare favorably, if not better, than other MEAC schools.

  11. I love FAMU as much as the next man, but I beg to differ on the quality of facilities. If you go to the web cites of the other meac schools (the top tear football powerhouses) then you will see they are leaps and bounds better than us. For example, NC AandT, Hampton, SCSU, even NSU has better facilities than we do (all are considered state of the art). Now when we talk facilities we are not just talking size of stadium, we are talking size and quality of the weight facility, stadium, press box, conference rooms, rehab rooms, etc. These are also things that will help to recruit better athletes and potential coaches. Because then they will see that we are serious about our athletic programs. As far as facilities, I don't think we can even compare to a southern university yet, and we all saw how the "took the weight room to us" in Birmingham this fall.

  12. Everybody is using Billy Joe's model for bringing in players and killing us with it. Yeah, he was the worse at recruiting. The D-1 move is a big reason why we're where we are and Corbin, Ray Matthews,Sr. and Jr., and Al Chester, Sr. and of course, Cast-Hell. We dominated the MEAC every year, now we can barely beat those same teams. They got smart and realized what BJ was doing ten years ago. They're getting better and we've gotten worse. Billy's players are all but gone and we're seeing the results. Let's get rid of all traces of the Corbin and Cast-Hell regime once and for all!

  13. 5:10,

I beg to differ. I've actually been to every MEAC school and i know their facilities are better than ours.

Let's see, NSU and Del State are currently ranked #1 in MEAC football. Del State's facilities suck. NSU's were on par with.

Hampton we've got better, with the exception of a b-ball arena and our tennis courts.

    A&T we're on par.

    B-CU. hands down were better.

    Howard, no match, we're better.

SCSU, we match up. They got a better press box and just got turf. But overall we match up.

    Southern, we're better.

Do I need to go on?

  14. 7:34, Have you visited there locker rooms, weight rooms, etc. Check out Southern University's athletic web cite, AandT's Hampton, NSU, we are not even talking about the programs that we know we are better than (ie, BCU, Morgan, or even DSU). I will agree that as far as what the fans see, we have a respectable stadium (although I have heard some recruits say their high school stadium is nicer), but IMO the top tear athletic schools in meac are have better facilities. Below you will find links to the schools that I have mentioned. Southern and Famu do not have there information posted at this time. But I think that you will get a picture of what I am trying to say. I am not saying that we don't have nice facilities, I just think that it is time to catch up to those schools if we plan to compete with them for years to come, that’s all. Also we can’t fire a coach ever three to four years especially when there is no attempt to fully support the athletic programs the way other schools are being supported. If you want a great coach, pay for him, his staff and the facilities that he will demand.

  15. I thought a coach was brought in to win. Carter has had 2 seasons to get it together. Who cares if some of the players are from Billy Joe's era these guys are decent players. I think its the coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If Billy was such a joke of a coach, why is he the only black college coach to take a team to the semi-finals of the 1-AA playoffs? The only other coach to go as far as a Billy Joe coached team was Rudy Hubbard and he won it the very first year the championship existed under a very different playoff format. Billy was a great coach who ran into a bunch of fools who tried to destroy FAMU and literally destroyed his program. Now these same idiots who helped bring Carter in as head coach are turning on him like his name was Fred Gainous. Remember him? These nuts did the same thing to him, too.

  17. Well, some of the antics of Coach Carter's team this year off the field doesn't exactly make the poster children for the Saint Vincent DePaul Society or the Knights of Columbus.

They got some serious character issues.

And, Coach Carter's administration might do well to read the "FIVE Dysfunctions of a Team" ! We're talking about a seriously dysfunctional group here.
