A Rattler Nation poll shows that 63% of FAMU football fans would support a change at the top of the Rattler football program.
The poll conducted in mid October asked the question "Is it time to fire Rubin Carter?". Sixty three percent of respondents answered yes, while 30 percent said No, and eight percent were undecided.
The first losing season in Coach Carter's short 3-year career is likely to be his last.
Carter's relationship with his players is likely to be a key factor in his departure. Several of his players have openly complained about him. In early October senior quarterback Albert Chester quit the team, then a few weeks later a senior wide receiver Derek Williams quit.

Any word on Townsend?
ReplyDeleteHope he's on his way out the door as well.
ReplyDeleteI say give him one more year. Let's see if his recruits pan out.
ReplyDeleteBoth have got to go! NOW! Besides, we didn't treat Billy Joe right. BBB - Bring Back Billy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletewhat do you expect you bought a defensive "strength and conditioning" coach to be a HEAD FOOTBALL COACH.... ha ha ha
ReplyDeletebring back some alum rattlers with the spirit of a real rattler and the now how to coaching skills.....
Yeah. Carter must have interviewed well. As far as his resume, Carter only was a Defensive Coordinator at Howard back in the George HW Bush Administration, from 1998 to 1993.
ReplyDeleteHis defense in those years were tops in the D1AA, but he has been a D-Line Coach ever since. I guess you get what you get when the best candidate for a job is a lifetime position coach.
I say we can not afford to give him another year of nothing. Carter should be showed the door and put out to pasture. His coaching abilities was undoubtedly left on the fields of his NFL days or he never ad any. Why is it that people think just because a man played NFL ball, he can also coach a college football team. This is not always true. There is a difference in playing the game and learning (coaching) the game.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the long blog, but this is just my take on the situation.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very disappointing season for the rattler football team. I understand that as the head football coach the buck ultimately stops with you, however, I feel that we should honor Carter's contract and give him his last year. If at that point, he doesn’t have us in the hunt for a meac championship, then we should go in another direction. Here is why:
1, we hired him three years ago, two weeks before fall practice, with no choice of offensive or defense coaches (they both had three year deals, and as we have recently found out through coach Harris [basketball coach] famu's hiring policy is different from any other college in the country)and his team was still able to have a winning record and beat BCC, something that we hadn't done the previous three years under our beloved Billy Joe.
2. Honestly, under coach carter, the football infrastructure is in much better shape than he found it. If he does get fired, the next coach will have a team of great talent, that will be around for the next three or so years, ie the University of Florida post Ron Zook or Notre Dame post Ty Willingham. Many will argue that he was not able to develop players but my argument to that is-- how do you develop a 5'9'' quarterback that focus more on the run than pass only to quit do to “injuries,” then have another quarterback beat up on campus and quit (Chris Owens,) which ultimately leaves you with a walk on third string quarter back. I don't think Coach Eddie Robinson could have won much with that.
Give him a chance to hire his coordinators, someone that has total loyalty to him and understands his coaching philosophy. Also next season will be full of Carter’s recruits, at that point if his coaches and players don’t produce then it will be a no-brainer. But at this point I have serious doubts about firing him. I think that this type of action could lead to a revolving door and send a negative message to high school coaches and recruits throughout the state of Florida.
As Alumni, Boosters, students, and friends of the athletic program we all want to see 8, 9, 10 even 11 win seasons. If we want that on our fish fry budget we have to be patient, if not we need to cough up the money to pay for someone like a John Eason to come home (which will cost about 500,000 to 600,000) and give him the ability to hire a quality coaching staff. Until then give this man a chance, I do think it will work out fine. Remember Coach K at Duke University was there almost 10 years before he became a legion. Prior to that there were talks of him being fired, how different would there program be if they would have made that decision?
It's official;
ReplyDeleteHE AND the Athletic Director have both been fired
Yep. I heard it on 90.5 and IT'S OFFICIAL! Both the FAMU AD Nelson Townsend and the head football coach Ruben Carter have been FIRED! Stay tuned to 90.5 for more information!
ReplyDeleteIf the MEAC Champions Delaware State just got clobbered in the first round of the playoffs by Delaware, and FAMU finished second to last in the M-E-A-C, then Rubin Carter should have been fired, along with his entire coaching staff, Nelson Townsend and his entire staff, and we should hire Billy Joe tonight.
ReplyDeleteAt least we will dominate the league again and be representative in the playoffs.
The MEAC has got to be the weakest conference in all of D-1 football and we finished second to last. How can anybody rank a MEAC team highly next season with this kind of showing in the playoffs. It's a joke!
Thanks Dr. Ammons for making a change. Hire Billy Joe tonight and let's return our program to prominence! I don't care if Coach Joe coaches from the roof! We will not be embarrassed like this!
Chester, Jr's ass was sorry. He never would have played under Coach Billy Joe and that's one of the reason his dad conspired with Corbin and Company to have coach Joe fired.
