Rattler Sports Hall of Famer and former Pittsburgh Steeler, Earl Holmes has joined the FAMU football staff as an assistant coach. Holmes will work with the inside linebackers.
"He (Holmes) was here when they understood what winning was about," Joe Taylor said from his office Thursday afternoon. "Certainly he knows what it takes to be a good linebacker."
Holmes is one of five assistant coaches to join Taylor staff so far. The others are Tim Edwards (recruiting coordinator/linebackers coach), Lawrence Kershaw (offensive coordinator/offensive line coach) and Aaron Taylor (running backs coach).
"I am so, so blessed. It's like being drafted again. I got a chance to sit down and talk to some of the players today," Holmes said.
Holmes, a native of Tallahassee and a graduate of FAMU High, is FAMU's all-time career leader in tackles with 509. Holmes also holds the single-season record for tackles with 171 in 1995 and the single-game record with 30 against Southern in 1995.
The two-time All-American was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996, declaring himself the best linebacker in that draft.
Holmes went on to have a 10-year career in the NFL, playing for the Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, where he finished his career.
This should help recruiting.
