FAMU basketball signs BIG center for next year

To say that FAMU Basketball Coach Eugene Harris inherited a team full of midgets when he was hired as basketball coach on September 17th wouldn't be too much of an understatement. Harris widely regarded as a recruiting wiz knew that if were to be successful at FAMU he would need big help, especially in the middle.

With an eye toward the future, yesterday Harris got a commitment from Cecil Bent, a 6-foot-9, 290-pound center from Swainsboro, GA. Bent, a honor student, announced his intention yesterday to attend FAMU.

"He's a monster," said Swainsboro boy's basketball coach Leroy Jordan. "I've had Cecil for two years and he has been a blessing. He has good hands and good feet."

  1. The one position we truly lacked the last couple of years. I applaud our new coach but at 6'9" he sounds like a power forward. I have no doubt he can play center but still...No true center since seven footer Jerome James graduated.

    Good Job Coach!

  2. The midget comment was inappropriate. Any young man that accepted the challenge to come to FAMU and play ball should be given more respect. Especially under our current circumstances surrounding athletics and the NCAA.

RN would not have attacked fellow students.

Good Job Harris in securing a center.

  3. 10:46, I concur with your "height" comment. I think RN's comment was very disrespectful to the young men who give their all to the game. Shame on you, NuRattler. Next time, keep those adjectives to yourself. They do nothing for the story.

  4. correction on my above post:
"...NuRattler's comment was very disresptful...", instead of "...RN's comment..."

  5. The midget comment may have been coy, but our basketball team is height challenged. We have a team full of guards !!!!

Coach Harris has them scrappy, but they are very short.

  6. ok, so they are short. and we need taller guys. point well taken. i think, however, that NuRattler's obligation is to report the news, not make snide and/or disparaging comments about the players.

  7. 12:30 pm,

obviously, you've never read the New York Post or NY Daily news. those type of snide comments come with the territory.

  8. I just wish the womens coach would follow suit and recruit more taller players. The new coach was working with what we had. Good luck this season Rattlers.

  9. I read the NYTimes, Washington Post, LATimes, Boston Herald, Philly Inquirer, etc. And I read their sports sections as well. But RNation is none of these. It is a blog specific to Florida A&M University, and therein rests my unease with the derogatory reference. The site is a bit more personal than, say, these conglomerate publications. I understand your point, 12:57, but I remain steadfast in my 12:30 pm comment that the comment was offensive.
