As the FAMU Class of 2008 walks across the stage today, SGA President Monique Yolanda Gillum will be among them. Gillum will become the first SGA presidents in quite a long while to graduate at the end of his/her term.

Gillum is expected to receive a bachelors of science degree today in political science, with honors.

While at FAMU Monique has served in several key leadership roles. In 2004, she was elected a student Senator, and “Freshman Senator of the Year”; she served as a sophomore Senator and Student Relations Chair in 2005; and she was elected Student Body Vice-President in 2007. She is a proud member of the Student Coalition for Justice, Student National Alumni Association, and the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

  1. Great for her. However, it's sad to note that most of the SGA presidents in the last few years haven't graduated on TIME. For instance, there is one past SGA President that is just now graduating.

  2. What is important is that the students are graduating and becoming very successful in the world. Different circumstances can arise when it comes to college(i.e. funds, family, etc).

Back to the topic at hand.....

    Congratulations, Monique!

  3. She never cared about students that were out of work during school breaks that were employed at the gym.

  4. 5:56--you're just looking for something to complain about. Gillum's just happened to be SGA president; she's a regular college kid just like so many other. go find something else to complain about, 'cause i ain' feelin' you right about now.

  5. Gillum was an outstanding SGA president. She looked out for the students, had Ammons' back, and took Castell to task when she called FAMU students "2's."

Monique is leaving some big shoes to fill.

  6. Well atleast we can all agree she did way better than Agnew did. He did nothing, than after his reign all he did was promote a bunch of liquor parties.

  7. Agnew was one of the seven votes that brought Ammons home. That's the bottom line. We don't care if he didn't win popularity contests inside SGA.

Take all your trifling he-said, she-said gossip back to the kiddie blog, Fridays on the Set or whatever you call it.

  8. Oh won't you shut up with this deciding vote non-sense. Another clueless person...guess what, no matter how much you whoop and holler he did nothing for the damn students. Monique Gillum at least tried to listen to the students. Yeah yeah yeah...he was the decided vote..give me a break anyone could have been the decided vote out of the seven, and for your information i could have swore that mr. holmes was the last one to vote, so you can cut that out. The truth still remains that he did nothing for the students....i guess you would throw a bunch of liquor parties too if you was terrible trying to look out for the student body?

  9. i could have swore that mr. holmes was the last one to vote, so you can cut that out.

And I could have sworn that it takes seven votes to have a majority out of thirteen people. If you take away Agnew's vote, then we'd have President Thelma Thompson right now with Castell Bryant as the Executive VP. SACS would have already stripped the university's accreditation back in December and state leaders would be placing the finishing touches on the arrangement to transfer all FAMU's academic programs, facilities, and money to FSU's control.

No one cares if Agnew didn't win the popularity contest with a handful of disgruntled whiners who think their petty bickering over nonsense is more important than real issues like saving FAMU from Castell.

The people on the Friday Set blog were sitting around trashing the personal lives of their fellow students while the Rattler Nation blog was defending FAMU against Castell.

Again, this blog is for the grown folks who actually want to talk about important issues that affect FAMU. We don't care about your student gossip garbage. If you want to do that, then take it to the Friday Set. We have real issues to discuss here.

Now run along, shoot your marbles, and stay out of grown folks' business.

  10. Again, i will stand by my point. Had "THE STUDENTS" not pushed him to get off his a$$, and get things done we would have had Thelma Thompson as president. So, no i don't credit Agnew for the vote I'll go as far as to give "THE STUDENTS" the credit for that last vote....was you even at FAMU during this time?

Honestly, i couldn't care less about how passionate you are about Mr. Agnew. Yet my argument remains he was a SGA President who did not do anything, and Monique Gillum At Least look out for the students of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

No matter how much you jump up in down about him voting for Ammons(Thank God he did), it still doesn't matter because whether you continue to ramble on he was a do-nothing President.

Plus, he did not do nothing better after his reign, but produce alot of negativity, so please you can cry all night. I'll continue to stand by my argument.

Lastly, reading some of the comments on this board i think you are naive because some of the posters are childish compared to the students, so take that so called grown folks stuff to "Rattlerroundup" so you and post all night, and no one will here you.

  11. Had "THE STUDENTS" not pushed him to get off his a$$, and get things done we would have had Thelma Thompson as president.

What a load of contradictions. First you claim that Agnew didn't care about the students and didn't ever listen to them. Then, you concede the point that Agnew accurately represented the will of the student body by casting one of the seven votes that brought Ammons home.

Additionally, you've failed to substantiate your claim that Agnew was considering voting for someone other than Ammons. If you'd actually bothered to attend the BOT presidential selection meetings or listen on 90.5 FM, you would know that Agnew used the information from Rattler Nation to take Thompson to task publicly. Thompson claimed that she'd received good audits at UMES, but Agnew publicly raked her over the coals for statement -- citing a bad state audit for her university that was originally posted on this blog.

Agnew went directly up against Challis Lowe and others who working behind the scenes to rig the presidential search process. Also, his vice-president, Monique, worked with him to rally student support for Ammons. It was all over the newspapers and all over the blog.

Agnew went up against Castell again by demanding that the E-School's financial control remain with FAMU. Castell was trying to hand it away.

The Friday Set blog students didn't do anything to help the cause of getting a strong 10th president for FAMU or save the E-School. They were too busy running off at their mouths like you about parties, drinking, Greek rushes, which guy is with which girl.

Here on Rattler Nation we focus on the big issues. Agnew and Gillum were both big issue people, which is why the stories about them on Rattler Nation were favorable.

You sound like one of the bitter Friday Set kids who feels slighted for some personal reason. Go back there and gossip and stop interrupting the meaningful conversations about moving FAMU forward.

  12. Going to Rattler Roundup is good idea. That site is encouraging alumni to support our alma mater and contribute $$$ to the university. Let's continue to support sites that have a positive influence on FAMU.

  13. Ha..Agnew went up against what....your living in a fairy-tale. I'm going to stop arguing with you..cause it's entertaining.

  14. It's clear that you didn't keep up with the most important presidential selection process in FAMU's recent history.

Castell and her cronies were trying to push Thelma Thompson on Rattler Country. Rattler Nation detailed the plot step-by-step.

Agnew ripped Thompson apart publicly when she claimed that she had good audits at UMES. RN summarized what happened on the story below.

Agnew definitely did the right thing by exposing the lies of Bryant's handpicked successor.
