Off Topic: 58% believe Obama tossed Wright for expediency

The latest Rasmussen report findings on the Rev. Jeremiah Wright media circus are not very good for the Barack Obama campaign. The majority of the country believes Obama's denunciation was political expedience.

[The] national telephone survey found that just 30% of the nation’s Likely Voters believe Barack Obama denounced his former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright, because he was outraged. Most—58%—say he denounced the Pastor for political convenience. The survey was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday night. Obama made his statements about Wright on Tuesday."

Particularly damaging are the sub-panels:

"Only 33% of voters believe that Obama was surprised by the views Wright expressed at Monday’s press conference. Fifty-two percent (52%) say he was not surprised. Fifty-six percent (56%) say it’s at least somewhat likely that Obama 'shares some of Pastor Wright’s views about the United States.' ... Seventy-four percent (74%) of Republicans believe it’s somewhat or very likely that Obama shares some of Wright’s views."

The national tracking polls, as well as the numbers in Indiana and North Carolina, show a significant erosion of support for Obama. (More later) Meanwhile, the fallout from the Wright media circus dominates headlines in North Carolina. Via The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder, yesterday's front page from the Charlotte News & Observer."

  2. Ditto, 10:30. We don't care what the Rasmussen Report says. For a more thougtfully objective commentary, read Bill Moyers' response regarding the Wright affair.

  4. Doing what you have to do, sounds an awful lot like doing what's easy, not what is right.

I still support Obama, and I still love Rev. Wright.

  5. I don't understand how an America hater like Wright can even have a congregation. Are there actually people who agree with him? OMG. I have lived such a sheltered life.

What does he want America to be?

you're obviously an uninformed none thinker who has to be spoon fed your facts from 90 sec. segments on the 24 hr. cable channels.

  7. Wright, (Andy) Young, and J. Jackson all run in the same circles (old guard negro politics). How dare this young upstart take politics to a new level without their consultation, permission, and blessings. How dare that he declares that, he's an American who happens to be Black running for office. In their view, he should declared himself a Black man who happens to be American running for office.

Wright and the rest need to get over themselves.

  8. Exactly...this is so sad!! I would definitely say..the crab in the bucket mentality. For the life of me...I can not fully understand why this man..Rev. Wright or Wrong...would think that it was the best thing to do...to go over to the National Press Club and make such statements. Does He even care about his former member or maybe he was only caring about himself...definitely not doing such a thing for the Lord..as he claims. God does need anyone one person to claim that they are doing His work by spewing such nonsense and possibly sidelining one of the best statesmen our country has ever seen...since the Kennedys. Wasn't Rev. Wright looking at the whole fuller picture?Who are his advisors? Or is he such an egomanic and focused on himself...that he couldnt possibly see the forest for the trees? And what is wrong with some black folks anyway? You know damn well, the majority population in this country has since made up their mind about Rev. Wright and no matter how much posturing he did...they were not going to change their thoughts. So why not lay low...until "our" boy got into the White House and then come out with..."you know I believe this and I believe that". But nooooo...his enormous size ego got in th way(sound familiar) and he had to have his say...possibly hurting Obama tremendously. And i am just thru with all black folks..period!! Because they dont ever get it, but continue to run around in circles..destroying each other!! I wonder how Barack feels right now...because he knew it was going to be hard...but I know he never thought one of his own people would do him in. Talk about Judas and Jesus!! I will continue to pray for him...which his pastor should have been doing. DAMN!!!!

    1:50 AM,

Your ad hominem response illustrates beautifully one of the largest problem at FAMU and in the community at large.

We need to learn how to discuss things without calling names and attacking the people we disagree with.

When you attack the person, you are not addressing the issue. You are just revealing something ugly about yourself.

Maybe you think the person is mis-informed. Inform them. Maybe you think the person is mis-interpreting the facts. Help them interpret the facts.

Discussion, not abuse, is the mark of a civilized people.
