Officials from FAMU's accrediting body, the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, are meeting this week to discuss, among other things, whether or not they will remove or extend the university's probationary status. The university has been on probation with SACS since June 22, 2007.In December 2007, SAC's Commission on Colleges extended FAMU's probation for another six months following review of a Special Committee Report and the institution’s First Monitoring Report.
Since December, the Commission made another monitoring visit to FAMU.
The Commission will have the following options: (1) remove Probation with or without an additional monitoring report; (2) continue the institution on Probation, request an additional monitoring report, and authorize a Special Committee; or (3) remove the
institution’s accreditation.
Other Florida university currently on the SACS watch list are the University of Miami and Miami International University of Art and Design, both of whom are on warning with the agency.
FAMU remains fully accredited by SACS. University officials hope to learn the Commissions discussion sometime this week.

ReplyDeleteTrust me, and I too work at a Florida public university, ALL universities have problems very similar to FAMU's. The main difference was (no, not that FAMU is an HBCU!) that FAMU's problems showed up so obviously, when you were supposedly in the process of being "saved" by Castell Bryant. It made a great story for the newspapers, to show the contrast between what Castell Bryant SAID was happening versus what was actually happening. If UF President Machen was saying how great things were in one article, and the next article outlined how great things WEREN'T, that makes for great copy. You've got an award winning Journalism department and student body...ask them if this isn't just the kind of story they delight in, whether or not the "players" are predominately African-American. This wasn't a black or white issue, it was a GREEN issue -- with the students and lowest paid employees caught in the crossfire. I'm so glad you're back where you deserve to be, because you do things no other Florida university will even attempt. But watch out because it looks like FSU is giving you a run for your money! It's all about EDUCATION, not Administration. (Well, and football, of course!)
