Governor Charlie Crist today signed the $66 billion 2008-09 budget, funding essential state services at meaningful levels, protecting the most vulnerable, keeping citizens and visitors safe, and providing for continued learning gains of Florida’s students. The 2008-09 General Appropriations Act funds the critical needs of the state, without burdening the citizens of Florida with a tax increase in these difficult times.
The Governor's budget included two FAMU projects that were red flagged by TaxWatch as unnecessary ---
$2M for expansion of the FAMU school of pharmacy and $2.5M for a Rural Diversity Healthcare Project in Crestview.
College of Pharmacy officials maintained that the $2M is critical to allowing the school to begin planning to construct a new wing on to the pharmacy building (Phase II), and maintaining the college's accreditation.
Other FAMU projects in the state budget include: $2.96M for the completion of the University Commons, $2.95M for the completion of the Multi-Purpose Teaching Gym, $7M for Tucker Hall Remodeling and $5M Utilities/Infrastructure/Roof improvements.

OMG! Tucker Hall is FINALLY going under the knife! It's about danggone time. The building looks the same now as it did back when I graduated in the mid 70s. In fact, I was a student attending classes in Tucker Hall when the paintings (of students climbing the stairs) were done on the stairwell walls.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gov. Crist and Sen. Peadon!
ReplyDeleteNow, how long will it take FAMU to get started on the Turcker Hall project. I am an CAS Alumn, and I can't wait to see the new and improved Tucker Hall
ReplyDeleteAmmons and his team aren't like other administrations FAMU's had since 2002. They understand the importance of spending legislative projects in an expeditious manner.
ReplyDeleteI hope they rip that old elevator straight out of the wall and put in a brand new one. Plus, it would be great to put some new computer labs in the building and make sure the each classroom has a PC with an LCD projector.
I second that motion 12:24am, because famu is surely behind the digital divide
