History has been made. Barack Obama has effectively clinched the nomination of the Democratic Party for president, the first time ever one of the major parties has nominated a black man for the nation's highest office.
A surge of support from superdelegates helped give the Illinois senator the 2,118 votes he needed to clinch the nomination and defeat rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, the former first lady who entered the race as a heavy favorite.
Exactly five months ago, Obama gained nation and international attention by winning the Iowa caucuses. Since then, the process has been an extraordinary primary season. The country has never seen a closer race and more than 17 million voters supported each candidate. Obama dominated the first half of the season, Clinton dominated the last half, but, the freshman Illinois senator had a stronger campaign and ground game. The dynamic senator has mobilized and inspired a movement of millions of citizens with his message of change and reconciliation..
These were two historic candidates but only one could win.

Obama didn't gain national and international attention "exactly five months ago," as you state. Obama gained "national and international attention" in 2004 when he spoke at the Democratic National Convention, unless, of course, our definitions of "national and international attention" are different.
