Advice from Bryant & Co. to 10th president

Most former senior administrators and Board of Trustees supporters of FAMU’s 2005-2007 interim administration won’t be in attendance for President James Ammons’ inauguration today. However, if they were present, here are some bits of advice that they might share with him.

Vincent June, former vice-president for student affairs:

It’s easy to cover for yourself if you stop funding the recruitment program and enrollment drops by a couple thousand. Just say we’re facing a tough economic period and that you’re working hard to create a new recruitment strategy that de-emphasizes African Americans. Then, claim that FAMU never had a recruitment program before you arrived. The people who have no clue about FAMU’s history will buy it!

Grace Ali, former chief financial officer:

Don’t stress over getting unqualified state audits. They really aren’t that important. Even a qualified opinion is an opinion.

Jim Corbin, former Board of Trustees chairman:

Board of Trustees meetings are more fun if you just pretend like we don’t operate on Robert’s Rules of Order. Also, if you decide to try and raise FAMU to a new NCAA division, do as little planning and fundraising, as possible.

Challis Lowe, former Board of Trustees chairwoman:

Here’s the secret to getting along with the Board of Governors: they love to protect incompetent FAMU leaders. The more harm you inflict on the institution – the harder they’ll work to keep you in office. Trust me. They reappointed me even after FAMU got the worst state audits in its history.

And get those BOT meetings off FAMCAST immediately! Someone might think we’re trying to be transparent.

Castell V. Bryant, former interim president:

Do not, under any circumstances, trust what the state auditors say. Even if they tell you that there’s a $10.4 deficit, you should still claim that FAMU has a big surplus. You can pull any surplus number you want right out of the sky: like $8 million. If people stare at you in disbelief, don’t worry. The Palm Beach Post’s editorial board will believe your phony numbers. They STILL think I left FAMU’s finances in good shape!

Also, stop fighting for those hopeless students; after all, they’re only 2s on a 4-point scale. Do everything you can to hold them back. Withhold millions from their education. Try and give the entire College of Engineering to Florida State. Stop paying the faculty who teach them. You get the idea…
