Their appearance ignites screams of adulation from thousands of FAMU students, carrying signs saying “Four More Years!” Just before the Obamas step inside, Band Director Julian White cues the Marching 100 to start playing “Hail to the Chief.”
Minutes later GOP challenger Mike Huckabee, waving and grinning big, also heads toward the building with his entourage. Brian Williams, broadcasting NBC’s Nightly News live from the television studio in FAMU’s J-School, announces that both candidates have arrived and then remarks how much he enjoyed lecturing in Lee Hall earlier in the day. Gwen Ifill is already in place inside the gym, ready to moderate her first presidential debate.
This scene could become reality if Rattlers simply pool their political resources and use their ingenuity. With the new construction on FAMU’s campus, the university could very well qualify to host one of the three presidential candidate face-offs that will take place in 2012.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) requires the following facilities:
Debate Hall: Venue for the main event. Ex: Ole Miss’ Ford Center, the site of last week’s debate, seats 1,250.Barack and Michelle Obama’s recent appearances at FAMU have raised the university’s profile as a major campaign stop for presidential hopefuls. Additionally the university has very experienced lobbyists/politicos who could work the Washington, DC-based CPD, including: Director of Governmental Relations Tola Thompson and alumni Congressional Reps Corrine Brown, Alcee Hastings, Kendrick Meek, and David Scott. Furthermore, Florida’s status as a perennial battleground state will make it an appealing debate site.
-FAMU's New Teaching Gymnasium will have a 9,000 seating capacity.
Media Filing Center: A working press room for the roughly 3,000 reporters who will be present. Ex: Ole Miss used a white tent area outside the Ford Center.
-Gaither Gymnasium has a 3,350 person capacity. A white tent on Bragg Stadium’s field could easily hold 3,000+ persons, as well.
Media Interview Center: A space close to the Media Filing Center to be used for press interviews before, during, and after the debate; 5,000 sq. ft. required
-FAMU's Recreation Center has 39,000 sq. ft.
Accreditation Center: A place for disseminating credentials and information; 3,000 sq. ft. required.
-The New FAMU DRS will have 116,000 sq. ft.
Let’s not permit the momentum we’ve received during the 2008 election cycle to decline. It’s time to dream bigger dreams and take FAMU’s political presence to the next level.

FAMU: Florida's most talked-about university in Election 2008
I love the forward thinking vision!!!! This is definitely a possibility if we pool our politico's together to support this. We definitely have the infrastructure to pull this off.
ReplyDeleteLets get Condi Rice/JC Watts/that other conservative black man to run against Obama.
ReplyDeleteI say "no whites on either ticket in 2012".
All debates at HBCUs!
Sounds wonderful! I think everything you've noted might work except the FAMU DRS school. School would, of course, be in session and the commotion and disruption of school-based activities might be a little too much. The school houses k-12th grades, and that might be a slight problem organizationally for such a grand event as that. Other than this minor infraction, I don't see why we couldn't pull this thing off. I say we oughts to go for it!
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I am talking about! Think big and comprehensively. I logged on today specifically to ask fellow Rattlers to put together our resources to campaign for and send the Marching 100 to Washington, D.C. for the inagural parade of President-elect Barak Obama!
ReplyDelete...Um 10:28, we're talking about progress in AMERICA, not propaganda. lol It'd get Chris Rock charged up though. I logged on today specifically to ask fellow Rattlers to put together our resources to campaign for and send the Marching 100 to Washington, D.C. for the inagural parade of President-elect Barack Obama on January 20th, 2009! This is another GREAT opportunity to represent our state, our University and the Tallahassee community on a stage that only our Marching 100 understands. Twice for fmr Pres Bill Clinton, and TWICE for Barack Obama!
ReplyDeleteWe ought to keep up with the requirements to be sure that they don't change without us knowing. I've printed out a packet for my own record and I'm behind this idea/effort all the way.
ReplyDeleteThe Marching 100 is a perfect fit for an Obama inauguration. However, we need to lobby his campaign now to the keep the 100 in mind for the festivities -- can't take anything for granted.
ReplyDeleteAlso, with the tough economy, it's probably a good idea to start looking for some corporate sponsors for the event. I'm sure there are some Fortune 500 companies who'd like to take credit for flying the 100 to DC on the new president's big day.
Exactly, as well as some state and local groups.
ReplyDeleteThis would be great for our university.
ReplyDeleteI hope in the very near future our president puts forth a plan to build a performing arts center or get unway the plan to have the hotel/conference center built down Orange Ave as the now outdated 10-year plan outlined.
Bethune Cookman has a really nice one...we should have one also!
Goooooo FAMU!
I agree 11:33pm. The 100 has already performed for him twice, once by request for his March 2008 stop in Tampa.
