They're off to the races !
Campaign week at FAMU is in full swing and candidates for SGA President/VP, Miss FAMU, Mr. FAMU, and all the other offices, are out pressing the flesh and filling up folks facebook boxes seeking votes.
Through his facebook page current SGA President Andrew M. Collins wished "all of the candidates a successful, respectful, and fulfilling campaign week!" And reminded all, win or lose he's not leaving office until May 3rd!
FAMU student elections are sometimes expensive propositions with candidates purchasing scores of t-shirts, flyers, billboards, and even tv-commercials to sway student opinions. According to a recent FAMUan article, the current economy has caused some candidates to tighten their belts and rethink some spending.
One candidate said, “commercials were on his wish list, but when we make decisions we have to look at the utility and cost of what we’re doing. We were blessed to be able to get a billboard, but we still have a lot of posters, flyers, and other paper- based products.”

Andrew Collins is one of the most ineffective SGA Presidents I've ever seen. And the nerve of him to put something like that on his facebook page. Get it together homie!!!
ReplyDeleteAt least Andrew Collins attends university convocations and other functions. That's more than I can say about MANY of FAMU's other students. I watched today's Black History Convocation and was extremely disappointed in the poor student attendance. I'm sure if Rick Ross Or T Pain was there, it would have been standing room only. Some of you students need to decide when you want to get serious about life. Life is more than net checks, freaky clothes, and rappers.
ReplyDeleteAs an alumnus and financial supporter, I've had the pleasure of meeting Andrew Collins and some of the other student leaders. Andrew impressed me as a very mannerable young man. I don't read facebook and have no idea what's on there, but I imagine young people use it as a tool to just chill and let your hair down sometimes. Each time that I've seen Mr. Collins in public (and there have been many), he has represented FAMU very well. I'm proud that we can call him one of our own.
Students, please support FAMU. There's more to life than being loud and flashy. There is no reason that this morning's convocation shouldn't have been standing room only.
For the record, I am in no way related to Andrew Collins. I'm a casual observer and I wish FAMU had more students like him, Amanda Byrd, Omari Crawford, Mellorie Lumpkin, and Monique Gillum.
I was having this conversation last night with a couple of other Rattlers and our concerns were similar. Our question was, will the atmosphere be different post President Obama's election? We found ourselves excited and wanted to be on campus for this time(esp because its campaign time). I am saddened to hear that again, Convocation was not standing room only. Ever since CVB the events have been hit or miss. Also at as traditional campus, accounting for the working and the evening students but the major cancer for FAMU students seem to be that most don't live on or near campus. And I think that we should be on here encouraging each other as Rattlers to do better.
ReplyDeleteWe could probably do better with better speakers and better planned programs. That might interest the study body.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the folks that plan these convocations aren't planning them for students.
Do you think the attendance would have been any better if the speaker was Cornell West? The message conveyed by yesterday's attendance was "all I'm concerned with is a net check". Truly sad.
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, I think that we would have had better student attendance if the speaker was Cornel West.
ReplyDelete8:14 reading your post reminds me of a conversation I once had with a FAMU dean. After I complained that the selected speakers were boring, the dean very carefully explained that the speakers were selected to inform me, not entertain me. In fact the Dean's words were, "if I wanted to entertain you, I would invite Red Skeleton to speak."
ReplyDeleteStudents, get in the habit of attending lectures and speeches that are not related to popular culture. Administrator get in the habit of inviting people who actually have something important to share
As a classmate of Mr. Collins,he is constantly away on some "business" for FAMU. He is not wanted as a member on group projects because he is a known slacker and expects that since he is SGA President that his team members are supposed to take on his load. Who knows, maybe he really is constantly doing SGA work, but we come to FAMU for an education, not for elected positions.
