Just one week after FAMU held a press conference to announce Walter McCoy’s hiring as the men’s track coach, McCoy has resigned effective immediately.

His exit follows a recent brush with local law enforcement. McCoy was arrested by the Tallahassee Police Department at 5:57 pm on Monday and taken to the Leon County Jail. He was later released at 9:08 pm that evening.

The arresting/booking charge was listed as: “hold for Jefferson County Case #08169CFA Unemployment Comp Fraud.”

The Leon County Sheriff's Office also lists a 1997 arrest on McCoy's record in which a $1185 bond is referenced.

  1. In the very beginning, I stated on this blog and others that hiring Walter McCoy was a huge mistake. I wish him well, but I want nothing but the best for FAMU and McCoy just didn't fit in that category in my opinion.

  3. What a damned shame. This is what happens when keeping it real goes wrong. I don't know Mr. McCoy personally, but let's be honest. Was he most qualified candidate, or did he benefit from "buddy" system?

  4. McCoy was not the most qualified candidate. I'm suspicious that Al Lawson had something to do with this hire. I don't have any evidence, it's just a hunch.

  5. "McCoy's arrest should not have affected his employment status with FAMU, and I think he would have been fine to remain as a coach while sorting out his legal issues."

  8. Can we just get a break from the incompetence that seems to fester at our institution for just one year?

Sure we can when we actually start hiring people that are qualified to do the job and not friends, family, etc etc... FAMU is not a place to hook up your folks or it's not suppose to be. BOT should be cracking down on this crap but what I'm saying they probably just as much the problem than a solution.. If you going to hire you folks for jobs you better damn be certain they have a staff that can do the job and let them do it...
