The Rattler football team has a scheduled dates with the University of Miami Hurricanes this year and next, now RN has learned that talks are underway to venture into Georgia Bulldog country in 2010.
Published reports for the Atlanta Journal Constitution indicate that UGA has had discussions with FAMU officials about possibly playing next season. Georgia has an opening on its 2010 schedule and the game would be played in Athens.
What would Florida A&M gain from playing at Georgia, a program which has won at least 10 games six of the past seven years and would be a prohibitive favorite? Exposure in a state filled with top prospects is always a good thing, and it would give the program its second game in the state of Georgia in 2010 - following the annual match with Tennessee State at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
The bottom line, however, will be the HUGE paycheck FAMU would receive.
There's been no mention of what kind of payout FAMU could receive, but Louisiana-Lafayette will get $875,000 to open next season in Athens and New Mexico State will get $925K for a game in Nov. 2011.
The game would likely fall in the middle of the season, which could also fall in the middle of a run toward a MEAC title. But the Rattlers didn’t let anything like that stand in the way of scheduling this season, with their match at Miami one week before playing at preseason MEAC favorite South Carolina State.
Can someone help me understand why getting our @$$ kicked in Athens, GA gives us positive exposure to "top" prospects in Georgia. I've never understood this line of thinking. Now if it is just about the pay day, then that is a different story......
ReplyDeleteThose who are already claiming defeat are punks and have absolutely NO reason claiming to be Rattlers. FAMU will beat UGA, PERIOD!!
ReplyDeleteA defeatist attitude is contrary to EVERYTHING that FAMU stands for.
This probably just going to be the strategy for athletics for the next few years. Play a big time D1FCSer each year. It does NOTHING for football recruiting if you get blown out, but if you have a decent showing then you're showing something.
ReplyDeleteWell I could argue that playing BCu does NOTHING for our recruiting players. I'd take Goergia. Maybe games like this keep others out of our back yard a bit.
ReplyDelete@9:37 AM: Can you name the last Div 1A/FCS school we beat after Miami in 1979?
ReplyDelete@12:37 PM, you have a valid point. However that is our "rival" school and thus that game isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I still fail to understand what we gain by playing Div 1A/FCS schools without a plan similar to App State to actually win some of those games and really attract some top prospects. Meanwhile we have another @$$ kicking scheduled for Miami this year... personally I think we have enough competitive games in conference in a home and home series.
I am sure though we all recognize though that this is about the money. I hope @9:37 is a booster.... if we raise enough money maybe we won't have to take these games....
2:30 PM, yes I (9:37 AM) am a booster, season ticket holder, monthly Foundation financial supporter, and attended the 1979 FAMU vs UM game. Declaring that UM is going to beat us before we even show up is the same as saying a pretty woman you just met ain't funky. You don't know that.
ReplyDeleteFAMU will beat UM, but that's on down the road. Lets destroy Delaware State first.
Have Faith In The Rattlers.
The last time Mark Richt face FAMU, he lost to FAMU. Richt was a QB on the UM team that we beat in 1979.
ReplyDeleteWell our "rival" school doesn't help us attract athleltes. Acually they get WAY more out of the arrangement. UGA is a SEC school. I vote for that game over BCu. I know most athelets would too. We may even need to get out of the MEAC! How about that?!
ReplyDeleteI agree with 9:21. I'm all for the exposure but to me it just seems like we're throwing our team out there to be humiliated. I'm not a defeatist, I'm a realist. It's like saying ok, we can get our pride stomped on as long as they pay us enough to do it. Lest we forget the Virginia tech ass whoopin...
