Sweeping renovations are coming to FAMU’s College of Education.
In 2007, Sen. Alfred “Al” Lawson steered $8,301,606 into FAMU’s budget to help remodel the Gore Education Complex. That was followed by another $5,600,000 in 2008. Both appropriations came from Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) dollars.
During a recent university forum, CFO Teresa Hardee said FAMU will use a portion of those PECO dollars to refurbish the Gaither Gymnasium Teaching Pool by fall 2010. As Rattler Nation reported last summer, the teaching pool needs to be completely reconstructed. The project will cost $2.6M.
DAG Architects, a Destin, Florida-based company, is in charge of the designs.
From DAG Architects:
DAG is directing the extensive renovation and remodeling effort to update the historic 71,366 SF Gore Education Complex facilities at Florida A&M University. Improvements to the three building complex will correct life safety, accessibility, and security deficiencies, upgrade the classrooms, labs and teaching spaces with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and replace the roofs, and the plumbing, air conditioning, and electrical systems. In addition, the defunct Teaching Pool at the Gaither Athletic Campus will be completely refurbished. Special attention will be paid to planning how the buildings of the Gore Complex will interrelate to other buildings in the FAMU National Historic District, and to the creation of special pedestrian corridors and landscaped student gathering spaces.

Here's hoping that somehow the refurbishing of Bragg Stadium into some type of "teaching facility" finds its way into all of the construction that's now being planned to be going on all around it.
ReplyDeleteAnd what kind of teach would take place there?
ReplyDeleteHow about hoping that all you folks with mouth will begin to open your wallets with more than a token $500 here or there!!!
B-T-W, I love the re-design of GEC. I hope we're able to pull it off. This looks great.
ReplyDeleteAny Allied Health curricula that are related to athletics can be housed in a refurbished Bragg "teaching facility". Along with additional housing/beds and other student services like a copy/print center, banking services (a leased space), a career resource center, etc.
ReplyDeleteWhy discourage people from giving $500? $500 here and there is much better than the free lip service most people give anyway.
Nevermind the stupid comments. This is a start, but we need real live campaigns. If all you can give is less than my ift, its perfectly ok. Let's all give, even if its $20.
ReplyDeleteThis is what should be covered in a yearly report or regular reports to alumni, this is what we care about, this is what we will contribute to, this is the kind of news that will make us continue to come back and keep up with what's going on at our alma mater.
ReplyDeleteThis is what recruits care about - this will impact their overall experience on the hill!
This is why we shouldn't have read about it first hear!!!
Where is the true leadership?
Yes this is a great start! And the FAMU Foundation should be pushing a serious campaign that's VISIBLE to everybody - Rattlers, non-Rattlers, corporations, gov't, EVERYBODY!
ReplyDeleteI cant believe folk are making stupid comments about donatios. If $20 is all you can give, then that's fine too! It'll go a long way in purchasing bulk toilet paper for our new dorm bathrooms! Obama had folk giving $5 a month with his grassroots campaign, so I know $20 will stretch. A little something is better than nothing at all anyday!
PREACH, 4:43PM!!!
ReplyDeleteAmen 4:43 and 5:26!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be great to have stories like this on the alumni website? Where is the alumni blog where comments and suggestions on such news can be shared.
With all due respect to those who commented this is a good start, it's not - besides from being long overdue, we've not even heard about such projects and request of our support from the current leadership. We CAN and HAVE to do better. All it takes is competence, commitment, and integrity with VISION. If people believe in your vision they will follow you. Has anyone asked Dr. Ammons lately, What's keeping FAMU from being GREAT? I'd like to hear the answer to this question.
The next building they need to renovate and remodel is Perry-Paige that building looks a mess and also they need to do something with Bragg stadium it looks awful its to old and raggedy we need a brand new stadium. FAMU is so backwards don't they know this will help out in recruiting prospective student/ athletes.
ReplyDeleteI hearing that Bragg will be in the mix soon, but the school is trying to get these other project off the grown. The new development is all going to coincide with the new FAMU Way project initiated by the city as evidence in the announcement of the New Polkinghorne Village and the this Gore project. Bragg will likely be redone by the 2014 football season, but we got to be patient and wait and see.
