Florida A&M scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to upset N.C. Central 22-21 and give acting head coach Earl Holmes his first-ever victory as a head coach.

Holmes, 39, starred at FAMU DRS before joining the FAMU Rattler Football team.   A middle linebacker, he was drafted in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He spent five season in Pittsburg, two in Cleveland and three with Detroit as a player.  He coached two years as a high school assistant in Lake Mary, FL, before joining the FAMU staff five years ago.

The victory came hard on the heels of Florida A&M head coach Joe Taylor announcing his immediate retirement on Nov. 7. He compiled a 233-96-4 career record.

The Rattlers won on the foot of sophomore kicker Chase Varnadore who's 36 yard field goal with two minutes remaining in the game proved to be the game winner.  Varnadore kicked five field goals in the game.

Florida A&M outgained NCCU 270-88 in the passing game and outrushed the Eagles 117-41.

Damien Fleming was 29-of-41 passing for 270 yards for the Rattlers, and Travis Harvey caught 11 passes for 120 yards.  The Rattlers visited the "red zone" seven times, but only managed to score one touchdown.
