Earlier this week, the Florida Legislative Black Caucus elected Rep. Alan Williams, a FAMU alumnus, as its chairman. He succeeds Sen. Arthenia Joyner,  another FAMU graduate.

Williams, who lives in Tallahassee, has been the representative for the 8th District since 2008. The 8th District covers Gadsden County and parts of downtown Tallahassee in Leon County.

Twenty-seven African American members of the Florida Legislature currently make up the Florida Legislative Black Caucus.

Williams will head a team of four officers: Sen. Oscar Braynon, D-Miami Gardens, Vice Chair; Rep. Hazelle Rogers, D-Lauderdale Lakes, Secretary; Rep. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, Parliamentarian; and Rep. Barbara Watson, D-Miami Gardens, Treasurer.

“I’m thrilled to have this chance to lead the Caucus and work to expand our work on the issues that affect our constituencies and disproportionately affect people of color,” Williams said.
