“I am pleased to announce that the men’s golf and men’s
tennis programs are reinstated to full compliance and competition for the
2014-15 school year,” said D’Wayne Robinson, FAMU interim director of athletics.
“The decision to bring these programs back comes with approval of President
Elmira Magnum and backed with the full support of the FAMU alumni. We look
forward to competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this spring and
competing for a conference championship.”
The university’s Department of Athletics suspended both programs as part of a budget-cutting process during July 2014. Men’s Golf Head Coach Marvin Green led a successful $30,000 fundraising drive to obtain the money his team needed for the season. FAMU officials also sought additional contributions to make the reinstatement of the men’s tennis team possible.
“We are excited that Florida A&M will compete in both
men’s golf and men’s tennis this year and look for both programs to continue
its rich tradition of delivering competitive teams and providing a positive
experience for their student-athletes,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E.
Thomas.
