The Peruvian National team will open the Championships on today,
Friday against China at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. In the four-team pool with Peru
and China, are Poland and defending champion Dominican Republic.
Abreu, a 6-0 outside from Lima, Peru, was 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie
of the Year, and was-2nd Team All-MEAC a year ago.
She had a season high
22 kills against North Florida (9-20-16), and had a season-high 22 digs, to go
with 18 kills against Bethune-Cookman (10-30-16).
Abreu had 19 kills against SE Louisiana (9-3-16) and 18
kills against the University of Georgia (9-13-16).
She finished the season ranked #6 in the MEAC in Kills
(3.18) and Points (3.59), and #8 in Hitting (.247).
FAMU Head Volleyball Coach Tony Trifonov was excited about
Abreu's participation in the World Championships.
“We are happy for Nicole to have this opportunity to play on
an international stage,” he said. “It should be a good experience for her,
which should carry over into our season. She had an outstanding freshman year,
and she's just an all-around player who will only get better.”
Abreu is the fourth Lady Rattler to have international
summer experience, joining hitter Maria Yvette Garcia, Pamela Soriano (2015
Under 20 Dominican Republic National Team) and libero Valentina Carrasco (2015
Under 18 Peruvian National Team).
