On Tuesday, August 28th, Florida A&M University alumnus Andrew Gillum won the Democratic nomination for the governorship of Florida. Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, released the following statement after his victory:
“As a child, my grandmother taught me to work hard, do right, and bring it home. To bring it home for my mother, my father, my brothers, and my sister. To bring it home for our community, our beliefs, and our values. Tonight, through the grace of Floridians all across this state, I am deeply honored and humbled to be your Democratic nominee for Governor.
“We have not yet reached the mountaintop, but we are on the move. It’s time to bring it home for everyone who has been told they don’t belong, for everyone who has been denied a chance, and for everyone who dreams of a brighter future.
“Starting now, it’s time to fight together for the issues we all care so deeply about: an economy that works for all, affordable healthcare as a right for every Floridian, public schools that prepare every child to succeed, an end to the gun violence epidemic that has taken too many lives, a commitment to protect and restore our environment, and a criminal justice system that treats Floridians equally under the law.
“It’s time to bring it home for all of us.”
Gillum will face Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Desantis in the general election on November 6th.
