The Democratic minority leader of the Florida House of Representatives, Rep. Kionne McGhee, D-Miami, has appointed an alumnus of Florida A&M University to a major leadership in the chamber.

“I’m proud to announce that I’ve appointed [Rep. Ramon Alexander] to serve as Minority Whip in the Florida House of Representatives,” McGhee wrote in a recent Tweet. “His commitment to service and strength as a leader will strength the Florida House.”

Alexander, D-Tallahassee, responded with a message on his Facebook page that said he is “honored to serve.”

“My job is to make sure all of our members are comfortable in their knowledge of what’s happening and are able to make a decision in the best interest of their constituents,” Alexander said in a quote in the Tallahassee Democrat.

McGhee is also an alumnus of historically black universities. He earned a B.S. from Howard University and a law degree from Texas Southern University.

Alexander and McGhee will serve in their Democratic leadership positions during the 2018-2020 legislative session.
